Organ Transplants
The UNet system (links all organ procurement organizations and transplant centers) will provide a match based on the medial Characteristic of the patient with the donor. Tissue match blood type, length of time on the waiting length, distance between the potential recipient and the donor, immune status, and degree of medical urgency are considered when factoring a match or compatibility. When organ information is entered from a deceased donor into the UNet system a “match run” is conducted. The transplant process consists of the diagnosis, transplant evaluation, waiting, the call, transplant, and recovery. Patients are placed on an organ donor list after being diagnosed with organ failure provided they meet the financial, psychological and medical requirements. While on this waiting list patients may be given pre-medical plans in preparation of the transplant or to sustain until one is available. Once an organ is available the patient receives notification and is then prepared for the surgery. (New Mexico Donor Services)
The recovery time varies dependent upon the patient. Some recover in as little as three days while others may have to remain hospitalized. The human body naturally attacks the newly transplanted organs; patients must take medications to prevent their bodies from rejecting or destroying their new organs. For the most parts a patient may live a normal life with regular check-ups and medication. Depending on the type of transplant, two or three medications are commonly used for long-term immunosuppression. The most common oral immunosuppressant medications are but not limited to tacrolimus, mycophenolate mofetil, sirolimus.
