Optimism may be harmful when an individual only focuses on the “bright side” of life ignoring negatives or “realities” one can be taken off guard by unhappy moments in life. Simply being unprepared or unable to cope effectively with these negative events causes stress to one’s mental health. These negative events can make a person resentful and may cause the individual to isolate themselves from others. People who always look…

Optimism is very important to a person’s physical and psychological well-being. Optimism can bring a person up when things appear down while optimism can also help a person get through the tougher times. Optimism can help a person be confident and hopeful in times when there appears to be no hope or it can be linked to depression among a few things. Many people have questioned if having optimism can help a cancer reddened person have hope or if optimism brings the person down when there is no help. Having optimism does help a person to keep up hope when areas of a person’s life appears bleak and studies have proved that optimism is good for a person.…

“There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so” (Shakespeare 2005 cited in Spoors .et. al. 2007).This quote from Shakespeare suggest our thinking makes something to be good or bad. Research has found optimists are generally healthier, recover faster from surgery and are likely to live longer . A study carried out by Maruto and colleges (2002 cited in Spoors. et . al 2007 ) in Minnesota, selected 839 patients that had referred themselves into the Mayo clinic, 40 years previously and submitted themselves to many test including pessimistic thinking .Results showed 200 patients died by the year 2000. The optimists had 19% greater longevity than the pessimists.…

Optimism is hard for me to achieve. I’ve been through so many tough times in my seventeen years and it is very difficult to stay positive. I’ve had to suffer through many broken bones and surgeries, depression and the things that go along with it, and also being bullied in school. I try to stay as optimistic as I can. Being positive and hoping for the best is about all I can do for myself. My life definitely has not been the best but even through all of the terrible things I’ve endured, I can still keep a positive outlook on things.…
Happiness is a quality that outweighs almost all others. Have one take wit, and put it on a scale. It would be oddly light. Take bravery, or sincerity. These qualities are much more substantial, but nothing can add up to what positivity and optimism can do to one’s life. Positivity is a trait that’s passed through people spiritually, and in everyday conversation. Anne Frank is a well known exemplar. She used her optimism to change the lives of the people around her. Now, one may think that remaining happy in tough situations is nearly impossible, or unimportant considering other situations. Nevertheless, plenty of scientific evidence, historical evidence, and common sense points to the truth. Remaining positive in any conflict will benefit…
Optimism is faith that leads to achievement. And it can be done without hope and confidence. The optimism is sheer terror.…
There are four factors that cause people to have unrealistic optimism: Their desired end state, their cognitive mechanisms, the information they have about themselves versus others and overall mood. Studies show that most humans are disposed to unrealistic optimism. Illusory optimism increases our vulnerability. This cognitive bias prevents people from taking precautionary measures in life, especially regarding health conditions.…
The definition of the word “optimism” is a favorable attitude about conditions or events in life. Some believe that optimistic views in life will have beneficial effects on psychological and physical health. However, excessive optimism can have harmful effects on psychological and physical health. Many tests and research have been done on people to see if optimism does in fact have an effect on psychological and physical health.…
Optimistic people are said to “anticipate the best possible outcome (Merriam-Webster, 2009).” This statement portrays how optimistic people approach life. Many studies have been conducted to determine whether optimism can actually lead to better physical and psychological well-being. Essentially, optimists are said to see the glass as half-full instead of half-empty. They are able to find something positive in any negative situation that they may encounter. In this paper I will analyze several instances of how optimism can affect both physical and psychological health.…
Optimistic people see these negative events as challenges and opportunities, which pushes them to try even harder to get over the humps. You'll never hear them say things like " this always happens to me" or "things will never change".…
When a person displays a positive psychology, he is very hopeful for the future and this is reflected in his performance whether in school or at work. As noted, his personality traits will determine his behavior or reaction (Coon and Mitterer, 2010). He does not make excuses for bad things or allow temporary setbacks to deter him, but continues to persevere (Seligman M.E.P., 2002). Upon completion of my Optimism Test, my overall score was average. I had no qualms about this because some of the situations in the questions did not happen to me, so I will assume that my results were indicative that others in my age and gender group responded likewise. Three experiences that account for my level of optimism were my decision to relocate, my experiences as a grandmother, and my divorce. These experiences may be life-altering for some, but they have not made me feel bad about the way I choose to live my life.…
