After the publication of el filibusterismo, Rizal left Europe for Hong Kong, where he live from November, 1891 to June, 1892 He’s Reasons for leaving Europe were:
1. Life was unbearable in Europe because of his political differences with M. H. Del Pilar and other Filipinos in Spain. 2. To be near Philippines and family. Before sailing to hong kong he notified Del Pilar that he was retiring from the political arena in Spain I order to preserve unity among the compatriots and that despite their parting of ways, he had the highest regard or him. * October 3, 1891- Rizal left Ghent for Paris to say goodbye to the Lunas, the Pardo De Taveras, the Venturas and other friends. After he then proceeded by train to Marseilles. * October 18, 1891- Rizal boarded the steamer Melbourne bound for Hong Kong. Where he brought with him 600 copies of El Filibusterismo there were 80 first class passengers’s—mostly Europeans, including two Spaniards and Rizal was the only Asian among them. * November 20, 1891- Rizal’s arrival in Hong Kong. he was welcomed by the Filipino residents and especially his old friend, jose ma. Basa. * He established his residence at No. 5 D’ Aguilar street and opened his medical clinic at No. 2 Rednaxola Terrace. * December 1, 1891- he wrote his parents asking permission to return home. * December 1, 1891- Manuel T. Hidalgo sent him a letter relating the sad news the “deportation of 25 persons from Calamba including father, Neneng, Sisa, Lucia, Paciano and the rest of us”. Family reunion in Hong Kong
* Before Christmas of 1891- Rizal was very happy by the arrival of his father, brother , Silvestre Ubaldo (brother-in-law), Not long afterward his mother and sisters Lucia, Josefa and Trinidad also arrived. His mother was 65 years of age then. * The Rizal’s Christmas of 1891 in hong kong was the happiest yuletide celebrations in Rizal’s life. For he had a happy family reunion. On * January 31, 1892- Rizal wrote to Blumentritt recounting their pleasant life in Hong Kong. “Here we are all living together, my parents, sisters, and brother, in peace and far from the persecutions they suffered in the Philippines. To earn a living for himself and his family, Rizal practiced medicine where * Dr. Lorenzo P. Marques- a Portuguese physician, who became his friend and admirer, helped him build up a wide clientele. In recognition of Rizal’s skills as an ophthalmic surgeon, he turned over to him many of his eye cases. and * In due time, Rizal became a successful and well-known medical practitioner in Hong Kong. He had many petients including british chinese Portuguese and americans. And also He successfully operated on his mother’s left eye that she was able to read and write again. Some friends of Rizal gave him moral and substantial aid in his medical practice in Hong Kong. * Dr. Ariston Bautista Lin- from Paris sent him the book on Diagnostic Pathology by Dr. Virchow and another medical book entitled Traite Diagnostique by Mesnichock. * Don Antonio vergel de Dios- offered him his services for the purchase of medical books and instruments which he might need in his profession.
