1) Read the short case on Pret A Manger and (a) identify the process in a typical Pret A Manger Shop together with their inputs and outputs, (b) Pret A Manger also supplies business lunches (of sandwiches and other take-away food). What are the implications for how it manages its processes within the shop? (c) What would be the advantages and disadvantages if Pret A Manger introduced "Central Kitchens" that made the sandwiches for a number of shops in an area. (As far as we know, they have no plans to do so). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pret A Manger (informally known as Pret) is a sandwich retail chain based in the City of Westminster, London, United Kingdom. The name comes from the French prêt à manger, meaning "ready to eat" or "lending to eat", a reference to prêt-à-porter (ready-to-wear as distinct from "bespoke"). The company was founded in London in 1986 by friends Sinclair Beecham and Julian Metcalfe while studying property law at the Polytechnic of Central London. Over the past two decades, Pret has built itself into a solid sandwich chain. Pret is a unique blend of a fine restaurant and an Italian coffee bar that makes available excellent food items like sandwiches, salads and baguettes, as well as hot beverages like coffee. Pret makes proper sandwiches by making use of only natural and preservative-free ingredients. Even today you will find only handmade natural food at Pret. The food stuffs on offer at Pret are free from the obscure chemicals, preservatives and additives that are common ingredients of the popular 'fast' food available in the market today. All Pret-A-Manger shops have a kitchen. The chefs start preparing the delectable dishes early in the day, choosing ingredients carefully, slicing, chopping and baking. One of the specialties of Pret is the wonderful service provided to the customers. It makes and sells these tasty delicacies to please the taste buds of the customers. The sandwiches available at Pret are freshly made all through the day, and not bought from any sandwich factory. Pret’s sandwiches are promoted as being fresh, natural and healthy. The company's marketing claims a passion for food, and that all items are made from natural ingredients. The company says that all sandwiches are made on the day of purchase in a kitchen at each location and that those left unsold at the end of the day are collected by charities that provide food to the homeless. Sandwiches are packaged in paperboard rather than sealed plastic, to emphasize that they are fresh and should not be kept overnight.

(b) Deliveries:
Pret also delivers freshly prepared, preservative-free food that they sell in their shops. All sandwiches and baguettes are made every morning by chefs using the finest Pret ingredients. Range of products varies from platters of sandwiches or baguettes, fresh croissants for breakfast and lots more. Customer orders are always freshly made and packed in special trays and bags to make sure it stays fresh all the way. Orders are delivered by very fit people on bikes or on foot. Usually orders are appreciated with a 24 hours' notice, but in certain cases Pret tries to accept orders up to 10 A.M on the day of delivery.
