The ‘case studies’ and ‘operations managers in actions’ provide a very wide range of information regarding the basic and innovative practice which an operations manager can adopt to enhance the revenue levels of their respective organizations. They make us aware of not only theoretical aspects but also practical aspects of an operations manager’s job profile. Anyhow, there are certain functions which an operation manager requires to perform, irrespective of whatever designation he is given in his organization. These critical activities include designing of basic goods or service of the company, specifying the quality standards and maintaining them thereafter, designing the process and capacity structure for the product or service, selection of appropriate location where operations of the organization including manufacturing process can take place, layout design, capacity needs, personnel needs, purchasing decisions and inventory requirement influence layout, human resources and job design. With the changing trends it is observed that operations manager is also responsible to take decisions regarding supply chain management, inventory scheduling and maintenance. From the text, it is learnt that all functions and profiles in an organization have a minimum of 40% jobs which pertain under the category of functions of operations management. An operations manager follows certain missions while performing all of the above mentioned functions. While designing product or service the mission is to produce such products and services which have outstanding quality and inherent customer value. While managing quality standards the mission is to attain exceptional value that is consistent with the company mission and marketing objectives by close attention to design, procurement, production and field service opportunities.
