This assignment came at an ideal time. Last September, I gave birth to the most beautiful, energetic, inquisitive and charismatic baby girl I had ever laid eyes on. That beautiful baby girl is now 14 months old and although she’s still energetic, inquisitive and charismatic, it’s not as cute as it once was. Now she’s sticking fingers inside DVD player’s, pulling down curtains and screaming at the top of her lungs for any little thing she desires. It’s funny how when babies are first born, we encourage them to scream and cry and even begin to panic if they don’t. Over time, you pray that they would stop.
Having been raised in a typical Hispanic home which used spanking and hitting as a form of discipline, one of the biggest challenges I face at this time is breaking that cycle by finding alternative methods to discipline her.
During the course of my research, I have come to under positive reinforcement as a way to encourage positive behavior. According to the text positive reinforcement is defined as something that strengthens a response by presenting something pleasant after the response (Stangor, 2010, p. 204). An example that took place in my own life is when I started working for the company I am currently employed with, I worked long hours and always tried to put forth extra effort to get the job done correctly the first time. After the first six months, I was recognized for my hard work in the form of Employee of the Quarter and a promotion. In being promoted and recognized, my employer was providing positive reinforcement and encouraging me to continue to work as hard if not harder for the gain of all involved.
The text defines negative reinforcement as strengthening a response by reducing or removing something unpleasant (Stangor, 2010, p. 204).
