Operant Conditioning

I am experiencing an Operant Condition of learning in how to become a Rehabilitation Specialist for consumers who have mental health disabilities and Co-occurring disorders. I am tasked with developing new ways of of thinking, and using skills to encourage my consumers to speak about how they are feeling. I am learning that this process is not as easy as it sounds.

There is a man where I work, who is a consumer of mental health services, who comes into the office every day and makes demands upon Staff members to help him, or do things for him.
The Staff is there to assist him resolve most life living issues he may have but, we brace ourselves each day because, the consumer uses profanity, vulgar, and foul language to get what he wants, and is very disruptive when he doesn’t get immediate attention. Why does he do this? I believe the answer is because of two reasons:
1. Avoidance and Escape Behavior by most of the Staff, including myself. Most of us try to avoid any confrontation with this consumer based on past experiences. He is can be very difficult to control or reason with , and is viewed as “bad news.” The first impulse is to try to get away from him but, we can’t and this gives him power over most encounters. He has learned that when he comes in Staff will hurry up and see him first before he becomes disruptive, and
2. Reinforcement without consequences is the next thing that usually occurs. The consumer sees that he is getting the attention he is seeking without having to wait behind others, and Staff encourages him to continue using this

As the line manager I met with the staff member who reported the situation via letter Rachel Crown to discuss and document the behaviour that was causing problems. The behaviour included: Laughing too loudly at inappropriate jokes with customers, rude and aggressive communication with customers e.g. John has told a customer to “ get out of the store” as he didn’t want to serve them. A meeting was arranged with John and HR to review company policy and expectation of the role and to hear what John had to say about his behaviour. The situation was resolved by moving John to a new department where he had excellent product…

The reason it was more because customer was not getting the 15% off on their bill which was provided from his company. Employee try to explain the customer it could take up to 3 months to 15% discount to kick in the bill until than they can’t do much. But the customer was not satisfying with there answer he want to cancel the new plan which he opened it little over month ago and denied to pay termination fee. I can see how employee was getting frustrated from this customer. All I can tell customer was not happy with the service. Employee hands are tie even if he wants to help this customer he can not help him. Only solution they can come up is to talk to customer service on the phone and see if they can cancel the plan without any plenty.…

A definition of challenging behaviour is: ‘Behaviour of such intensity or duration that the physical safety of the person or of others is placed in serious jeopardy or behaviour that is likely to limit or deny access to the use of ordinary community facilities, it would normally be a pattern that presents such a challenge to services for a considerable length of time.’ (Emerson et al 1987) Having and understanding this definition of challenging behaviour helps me to identify what is not challenging behaviour for a service user. Even when a behaviour is difficult for me or other staff to cope with or when behaviour makes me uncomfortable or is something that I do not agree with this is not necessarily a challenging behaviour and the service user should still be offered support by social care staff. For example if a service user refuses to eat with others or at the same time as others this should be respected as their choice and not be seen as disruptive or as non-compliance with the rules. It also helps me to pre-empt or plan for episodes of challenging behaviour and therefore have strategies and responses ready to de-escalate the behaviour.…

Personal issues and priorities can sometimes effect customer service because employees can let the mood over them flow into the work environment. An employee could possibly treat a customer with anger or indifference because of these issues. They can also be distracted from performing their required tasks. It is important to separate your home life from your work life. There are times an employee will need to put on a smile and positive attitude even when faced with such…
