Open Innovation and Strategic Leadership
Introduction
For most businesses, the concept of delivering innovative solutions is the key to provide sustainment to the strategic organizational to optimize business growth. The leadership role in developing growth is all about the design in the in the organizational structure, in which it can lead to an agile, flexible cultures the can support imaginative or lateral collaborations. Innovation is one of those terms that for most people agree that is positive and want more. However, the terms innovation and leadership goes hand and hand. Leadership concentrates on having a brighter future, so leaders are considered innovators. This paper will discuss two leadership models that support innovation in organizations, as well as a self-assessment on delivery and discovery skills.

Leadership Models
Open Innovation Networks
The open innovation model is a model the uses internal and external ideas, internal and external paths to business as organizations look to advance in their technology. “Ultimately, it a model that innovates with its partners to share both risks and rewards. The limitations between the organization and its environment have become more absorptive, meaning that innovations can be transferred inward and outward. (Kaplan & Winby)” The main concept behind the open innovation model is that organization cannot solely rely on its own research. However, they should purchase or patent inventions from other companies. Internal inventions that are not used in the organization should be outsourced through other companies. The model should go beyond the external foundations of innovation (i.e. colleges, customers, rival business etc.). Example of Open Innovation Network (Source: sciencedirect.com)
Proctor and Gamble has used this type of model in great success in the last ten years. “While most organizations uses their own R&D to drive innovation and growth, many Open Innovation supporters argue that the business logic has changed so that the

    This book focused directly on individual creativity in the business world and was based on a study of business innovators. The goal of the eight-year collaborative study was to put innovative entrepreneurs under a microscope and attempt to determine how they came up with their innovative ideas. In searching for answers, the study uncovered the origins of creativity, as well as the disruptive business strategies implemented in particularly innovative companies. They studied the habits of 25 innovative entrepreneurs and surveyed more than 3,000 executives and 500 individuals who had either started innovative companies or invented new products (pg.4). The central question that was proposed to these individuals was, “Do I know how to generate innovative, even disruptive, business ideas? And do I know how to find creative people or how to train people to think outside the box? These are questions that seem to stump senior executives, who understand that the ability to innovate is the ‘secret sauce’ of business success. (pg. 17)” Their research had led them to identify five discovery skills that differentiate creative executives from executives. These were associating, questioning, observing, networking and experimenting. By innovators developing these skills, they are able to produce services and products that are superior to their competitors. However, the book also states that just because an idea is innovative, it does not guarantee the result will always be a financial success.
