Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to make individuals aware that with the constant changes that are being made in technology online privacy and secure networking will always be issues. Individuals and companies can take many precautions to keep personal and financial information safe but security is constantly subject to being breached. The use of firewalls and antivirus software are deterrents to keep unwanted traffic from entering the network, but Wi-Fi technologies make it easier for cybercriminals to access files on the network without being tracked.
Online Privacy/Secure Networking
When using the Internet, how safe is your network against firewalls, antivirus, and hackers? The constant demands on individuals and organizations to implement new technologies to meet current demands can leave open gaps in a network. While firewalls and antivirus software are necessary steps in an effort to protect private and personal information, these applications are not a guarantee that networks will be protected from cybercriminals. The most vulnerable, and one of the more widely used technologies, is Wi-Fi networks. Wi-Fi allows users to connect remotely to a private or company network without being strictly monitored by the network owner (Gupta, 2010). Online privacy/secure networking, while constantly evolving, will never be completely private and secure.
Firewalls
Firewalls can be described as locking the doors and windows to your network (Dean, 2009). The level of firewalls that are implemented within a network usually depends on the information that would be exposed or vulnerable if a third party gained access. Usually, newly purchased computers come with a preinstalled firewall that the user can utilize during a trial period before making a decision to purchase the software.
