One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest

One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest is about how a man with the name McMurphy thinks he can escape doing work by pretending to be crazy, but when he gets sent to an asylum he discovers that not everyone can stand for their own rights. The whole story takes place at an asylum where the conflict is mainly between nurse Ratched and McMurphy. I believe the climax of the story is when a boy named Billy kills himself, because at that point McMurphy is so mad that he attacks the nurse, so then it is decided that McMurphy will be getting lobotomy. From the beginning I chose to observe the head nurse, Mrs. Ratched. She didn’t make a great impact on me because I didn’t believe that she believed she really was the person she was playing. Her facial expressions we're pretty good, very in character but they weren’t big enough for the whole audience to connect with her. So very rarely would I feel like she had a “spark” with the audience. The physical expressions were perfect for the character, but something was missing. Her voice sounded how it was supposed to sound, and she made every sentence perfectly articulated and with the right punctuation, but there’s something that just wasn’t there. . I found that her accent sounded phony, her voice sounded like an actor playing a character. Whereas a great actor would make you believe that they ARE the character! Maybe its that “little something” that you need to have to get everyone’s eyes on you! Because almost everyone else in the play caught my attention, but for some reason Ratchet did not do it for me.
One of the things that did impress me were the sound effects and lighting. I feel like it definitely benefited the story. At times only one man would speak and there would be one spotlight on him, it focused the crowd in the right direction, because... [continues]
