Peace and War
The film is adapted from George Crile's 2003 book Charlie Wilson's War: The Extraordinary Story of the Largest Covert Operation in History. It is directed by Mike Nichols, written by Aaron Sorkin, and stars Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Om Puri, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, Ned Beatty and Emily Blunt. It was nominated for five Golden Globe Awards, including "Best Motion Picture", but did not win in any category. Philip Seymour Hoffman was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. In the film Charlie Wilson’s war, Congressman Charlie Wilson believed in having a good time. Until the moment came that changed everything with the help of the 6th wealthiest woman in Texas Joanne Herring, and CIA’s Gust Avrakotos help raise money for Afghanistan’s to fight against the Soviet Union. Between conducting a covert war, raising money, and getting U.S. congress to actually care. Charlie Wilson changed the fact on his account of congress saying one thing and doing nothing, and when the world wasn’t looking he changed the world forever.
In the beginning Charlie Wilson tries to conduct a covert war and get the president of Pakistan to help afghan fight, provide weapons, and artillery. Though he is more than far from close to budging, he accepts and asks Charlie to go visit the refugee camp so he can get an emotional feel for the suffering his people are feeling. He wins over the president getting him to donate money and machinery if needed. The question still remains in my opinion, why isn’t the U.S. congress trying to do more to help Afghanistan in the first place?
Charlie raises money in the U.S. however seemed to be that the U. S. congress could care less about the money raised for the Afghani. The congress didn’t seem to understand the severity and importance of continuing to help. Sometimes laughing and making a mockery of the amount actually being asked for.
