The Old Testament contains three types of writings; History Genesis to Esther, 2 Poetry (Wisdom) Job to Song of Songs, and 3 Prophecy Isaiah to Malachi has Nine Eras of History. With in the writings there are 9 main eras of Old Testament History; Creation & Pre-history Gen 1 – 11. Patriarch Gen 12 – 50, Exodus: Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy. Then we have Conquest: Joshua, Judges, and Kingdom: 1 Samuel – 2 Chronicles, Exile: 2 Kings - 2 Chronicles, Return: Ezra – Esther, and the year of Silence.
I. CREATION & PRE-HISTORY (Genesis 1 – 11)
In the creation and pre- history Adam & Eve are created by God but sin destroys them along with the rest of man kind. There are Four Main events in this era, one is Creation. God created man in his own image (Gen 1 – 2). Two is The Fall of man. Man sin’s and falls from Gods grace, at this time sin enters the world (Gen 3). Next came the Flood. With the Flood came Judgment for the sins that was commented (Gen 6 – 10). Last comes the Tower of Babel. This occurs and this causes the Beginning of the nations (Gen 11).
II. The second Era is the era of the PATRIARCHS (Genesis 12 – 50)
In this era God choose Abraham & his descendants to be the ‘father’ of all nations. There are Four Main characters with in this era starting with Abraham. At this time Abraham is crowned by God father of the Hebrew people (Genesis 12 – 23). Since the fall of man God had to create a way for man to be saved. As we know the only way to do that was by bring forth the Messiah. He chooses Abraham of who was to produce the blood line for the messiah to come forth. God promises him land, seed, and blessing. He takes him from Ur to Canaan where he stayed and had two sons Ishmael (ancestor of the Arabs) and Isaac (ancestor of the Jews).
