Stereotypes can destroy everyone especially the ones who are stereotyped. In the book “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck, two guys named George and Lennie they are friends and they work together. They find a job on a ranch and there is a lot of stereotypes on the ranch that the work on. In the book Steinbeck uses Crooks and Curley’s wife to show the evilness and hurtfulness in stereotypes and how they can hurt person who makes the stereotype and also the victim.
Crooks, an African American blacksmith that works on the ranch, is one of the people who is stereotyped and you can see the effect that it has on his life. For example people exclude him from things, Lennie asks why Crooks answers with “Cause I am black. They play cards in there but I cant play because I am black”(pg68). This is messed up they are not letting him hang out with them because of the color of his skin. This shows how messed up the ranch truly is. He is excluded because of that and he is hurt and angry and this shows in the book. For example he tries to make Lennie feel bad and scared because he is hurt and that he is being stereotyped,”Crooks voice became soft and persuasive. S’pose George don’t come back no more” (pg71). This shows that Crooks is hurt because he is being mean and trying to make everyone feel as bad as him because he is hurt by stereotypes.
Curley’s wife also shows how stereotypes can be hurtful. For example George says “Well I think that Curley married a… tart” (pg28). A tart is another word for a slut, skank, or a hoe. George hasn’t even met her and he is already making judging her just by what he hears about her. What George said everyone on the ranch thinks that even Curley her husband… Another example is, Curley says “Any of you guys see my wife?”(pg53). He also asks where Slim is. Curley thinks that his wife is messing around with Slim. Everyone else does to because they follow Curley thinking there is...
