Of Mice and Men Final Essay
 
                John Steinbeck uses the characters George and Lennie to show a friendship about life’s complications in the book Of Mice and Men. Complications range from not getting the crayon the color preferred, to having someone close pass away.  George is placed in a position where everything is complicated. One thing might be right to him that others don’t agree with or understand. Life teaches the harsh lesson that the journey will be complicated. The decisions and choices we make in life create the person we become. After the incident with Curley’s wife, George makes the decision to kill Lennie. George knew the pain and agony the cruel men would put Lennie through, being the friend he is he had to end Lennie’s life in a peaceful and dreamy atmosphere. Benefiting from this choice was George; he showed his selflessness by taking the friendship for granted knowing that in the end something was going to happen. George has to follow his beliefs on this and listen to his heart; he knew both outcomes and knew he has to be the bigger person, by making the decision to save a friend. Slim talks to George after he shoots Lennie and says “You hadda, George. I swear you hadda” (Steinbeck 107).George doesn’t regret or dwell on the meaning of life ,instead he looks ahead to the future and knows there will always be a part of Lennie inside of him. Slim supports George in all ways and somehow tries to understand what George is going through. Within Slims life Lennie left a great impact, the way he acted was as if he himself had a place in his heart for Lennie .The decision George made played a part of the journey he was going through, and changes his life in a variety of ways.
