Of Mice and Men Essay
Have you ever had a friendship so strong that you would do anything in the world for that person? In John Steinbeck’s novella Of Mice and Men, there is such a friendship. The central theme of Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck is friendship and companionship. The close relationship of Candy and his dog have with each other demonstrates companionship. Crooks, the African American stable buck, shows the importance of having someone to talk to, even if they don’t really understand what you’re saying. The characters George Milton and Lennie Small show the importance of friendship and companionship throughout the novel. Candy and his dog’s relationship show true companionship in the novel. In chapter two, Candy is talking about their relationship, “’That’s a hell of an old dog.’ ‘Yeah. I had ‘im ever since he was a pup. God, he was a good sheep dog when he was younger’” (24). This quote tells you about Candy’s companionship towards his dog and how it has grown over the years. It is expressed through keeping the dog even after the dog got old isn’t anything like he used to be. A powerful bond such as this is built through many years of companionship, which makes saying goodbye even harder. During chapter three, Candy makes a tough decision about his dog, “At last Carlson said, ‘If you want me to, I’ll put the old devil out of his misery right now and get it over with.’ … At last Candy said softly and hopelessly, ‘Awright-take im’” (47). This was extremely hard for Candy to do because his dog was the only companion he has ever had. His dog has been with him through the good and the bad and has made so many amazing memories with Candy. Candy makes the decision because realizes that the dog is not happy and in pain and if Candy was a good companion to the dog, he knows he needs to put him out of his misery. This exceptionally tough decision is brought up again later in the novel.
