Oedipus the King
As Steve Jobs once said, “Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards.  So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.  You have to trust in something —your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever.  This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.” Similar to Steve Jobs’, Oedipus in the play overcame through many obstacles in his life over his fate. Sophocles’ play is about Oedipus and his endeavors to save his city of Thebes from a terrible plague caused by its failure to bring the unknown murderer of the previous king to justice. Oedipus falls victim to a curse he thought he had avoided, and must suffer the tragic consequences of fate. The theme of this play involves fate and its inevitability. Oedipus demonstrates the folly of seeking one’s fate, while presenting the possibility of gaining karma by his punishment.

Fate plays a huge role in Oedipus the King; it is stated that everything is pre-determined. Fate plays a role in everyone’s life. What is destined to happen will happen. Two main characters, Oedipus and Jocasta, attempt to control their fate by avoiding it. The first instance of this is when Jocasta tries to kill her son so he does not have to go through his life with what fate has in store for him. She leaves him in the mountains, but a servant rescues him. A shepherd agrees to take baby Oedipus and raises him for 19 years, to be adopted by the king of Corinth. So Jocasta’s attempt to control fate was thwarted, as Oedipus was saved. Oedipus also tries to defy fate when he leaves Corinth upon hearing his fate: to kill his father and marry his mother. However, no matter how hard he tried he was never successful in controlling his fate. In the end, he had to face the consequences of his destiny. How is karma related to the story of Oedipus?
