Oedipus "Book Report"
Title: Oedipus The King
Author and Date: Sophocles
Main Characters
* Oedipus- Oedipus is the son of Laius and Jocasta. He is the husband of Jocasta, his mother. Oedipus is the well liked king of Thebes. He is smart, acts fast, and has many great achievements. One of those achievements is the solving of the sphinx’s riddle that liberated the people of Thebes. Throughout the play Oedipus acts fast when his kingdom is sick, when he is attempting to put the blame on the death of Laius, and when he is trying to find the truth of his destiny. * Creon- Creon is a somewhat a politician in Thebes and is Oedipus’ adviser. In the play, Creon is a business man that tries to deal with Oedipus in a more professional manner. However, by the end of the play he is showing signs of his desire to take the position of king form Oedipus. Creon is a rational and intelligent man that thinks a few steps of people, like shown in the case of Oedipus. * Chorus- the chorus in the play are the representatives of the people of Thebes. They are always giving commentary on what is going on, namely the back and forth accusations of the death of Laius. The chorus wants the best for Thebes and therefore are there to make sure the people of Thebes have their say on the situation. Minor Characters

* Jocasta- The mother and wife of Oedipus. She is the sister of Creon and was the wife of Laius as well. She is a protective mother, wife, and sister, that when faces with the argument between he brother and he son/husband she attempts to stop it. She then finds out the truth of Oedipus and kills herself. * Tiresias- Is the blind fortune teller of Thebes that is requested by Oedipus to give him advice. He then accuses Oedipus of murdering Laius. Tiresias is a wise man who is never listened to. Main Setting(s)

* One whole day in the royal palace of Thebes. This is set in ancient Greece, around 430 b.c. It is during a time of great sorrow for the city...
