The Odyssey
Do you consider Odysseus a hero? The Odyssey by Homer is about a king from Ithaca named Odysseus and his warriors who go to war and have to go through alot of difficult obstacles to get back home to Odysseus' wife Penelope and his son Telemechus. Odysseus is extrodinarly strong but he doesn't rely on his strength, he relies on his mind. Odysseus is brave, prideful, and self-centered.

He is Brave because he goes into the land of the dead to face Hades in order to get back to Ithaca. "From every side they came and sought the pit with rustling cries ; and I grew with fear"(Book 11 line 598-599). Although Odysseus is very afraid of the Land of the Dead and Hades he still goes in and faces him to help his warriors and to get back home. He's very brave and it's not just at the land of the dead it's throughout the entire book.

Odysseus is also Very Prideful and is proud of any good that he does. "Cyclopes, if ever mortal man inquire how you were put to shame & blinded, tell him Odysseus, raider of cities, took your eye..."(Book 9 line 501-505). Odysseus took the Cyclopes's eye and was proud of it, he shouted it out to him and it might've been a mistake. Being Prideful is a positive thing but it can also be negative.

Odysseus has alot of positive traits but one of his negative traits is that he is self-centered. "When Odysseus and his men set sail again, they are punished with death...(686). Odysseus Knew that his warriors were gonna die but he had no intention of helping them, he was only there for himself and to save himself. But he did care about every one of his warriors.

The three main traits that Odysseus has are that he is brave, prideful, and self-centered. He prefers to use his mind over his strength to overcome his problems. Odysseus is a Hero because although his warriors died he still encouraged them and he killed the men that had destroyed his kingdom.
