Odysseus: A Man of Virtues

Nature is what compels us to develop the virtues which define us as humans. Odysseus virtues are the only things which keep him alive in the face of incredible danger at the hands of natural threats. Today we live insulated and protected from hostility nature. We do not have the virtue in the same capacity as those which enable Odysseus to survive.
In Odyssey many people consider Odysseus as a man of virtues and vice. He was declare as a man of virtues during the time Polyphemos start to eat is men, Odysseus almost kills Polyphemos but he knew he wont be able to escape the cave if he killed Polyphemos. He enable self-control and instead think of a way to trick the Cyclops and escape. He also show that he was a man of virtue during the time that he was with nymph, he decide to use is cunning mind to get want he want stating ‘’ She is mortal after all and you. Nevertheless I long – I pine all my days – to travel home…’’ He decide to stay loyal even though the nymph loved him but he wanted to go back home with is real family. Self control goes a long way and it is the first of many virtues Odysseus used to survie.
Odysseus also shows lot of virtues by using is strength. He used is virtues in the storm he endures when he leave Calypso;s island in order to stay alive. He used his incredible endurance and self – control to hold onto the rocks on the shore to keep from being swept out to sea.
