Odysseus As An Epic Hero

In the story of the Odyssey, Odysseus was put through many ordeals through which we see his moral and physical characteristics. After evaluating such characteristics we can see that Odysseus is a great epic hero. We can see that not only is he superior to most mortal men, he also shares many of the same desires, therefore fulfilling all the technical requirements of a "hero". Odysseus has insight about his own fate and destiny, but lives intertwined with the Olympic Gods. He also shares many of the same desires as the common man, but has more insight and strength to obtain them. Lastly, the story of Odysseus is tragic, and involves both love and death, which then shows his true strength.

When Odysseus ventures out on his journey, he is told by Athena that he is destined to be great, and through the whole war he knows that. When the war is finished he continues his journey home to his wife, his mother and his son. On his journey home he is faced with several obstacles put in place by the Gods to prevent his return. The whole time he was detained from retuning to Ithaca he told himself that he was meant to return home; that it was fated to him. When he was trapped on the Island with Calypso, he told her that he was supposed to return home, and that he would do it no matter what stood in his way. Through these acts we can see that he had his own opinions on his destiny, but that he was closely intertwined with the Olympic Gods.

Secondly, Odysseus shares many of the same desires as the common man, but he has more insight and strength on how to obtain them. Odysseus wanted more than anything to return home to his family, however, throughout his journey he was constantly held back by the Gods. He was made to observe horrendous things such as visiting Hades, and shortly after he has to witness each of his crewmates be eaten alive. This would have been enough for the common man to give up hope and settle in on Calypso's island. Odysseus,

What is an epic hero? Homers’ “Odyssey” is about an epic hero named Odysseus and his quest home. “The Odyssey” begins after the Trojan war had left Odysseus trapped, pointlessly seafaring for 10 years after angering Poseidon, the god of the sea. He tries desperately to return home to Ithaka and his wife, Penelope, and newborn son, Telemachus. Odysseus then has many hardships upon which he overcomes through his intelligence and wit. Odysseus is an epic hero because he is intelligent, he listens to the god’s advice, and he is witty; able to think on his feet. With the help of the gods he can survive things most men couldn’t.…

Despite being brave, intelligent, and witty, Odysseus true character proves him to be nothing but an ‘epic hero’. He has qualities that no one admires; qualities that make him unappealing and lousy. Odysseus, hero of The Odyssey, is not as he seems. In reality, he is just an epic hero, and anything but a true…

The Homeric epic, the Odyssey, is set in the peaceful years following the Trojan War, and concerns the returning heroes on their journeys home, in particular Odysseus of Ithaca. Odysseus is an epic hero; he displays courage, superior strength, and leadership, all qualities that people admire. While displaying these archetypal heroic traits he also displays his weaknesses as a man, particularly his excessive pride, which actually make him easy to relate to. So by demonstrating his strengths, and overcoming his weaknesses he becomes an epic hero, not only in Homer 's time but in the 21st century as well. Yet these archetypal heroic qualities are not his only heroic qualities, in order to win his battles and find his way home he needed to display other qualities such as cunning, shrewdness, and ingenuity.…

Being a greek, Odysseus has many basic moral values, such as loyalty, intelligence, glory and hospitality, or xenia. He achieved nearly all of these values with flying colors, intelligence and glory shown at war, hospitality shown in the land of the Cimmerians. However, his loyalty was questioned in the land of the Cimmerians. Odysseus and his men had gone down to learn how to return to Ithaca from Theban Tiresias, when his lure to get Tiresias to talk had also brought up other people who had passed away. One of those people had been his mother, who had raised him to become the man he is today. In ancient greece, you must always be loyal to family, proven by Achilles when Odysseus…

Odysseus’ adventures and growth are much more prevalent in the Odyssey than those of any other character. He begins on Calypso’s island, where he has everything, except happiness. His spirit is low as he longs for his homeland. Homer introduces Odysseus at a low point to emphasize the growth of Odysseus’ spirit from beginning to end. If Homer had shown Odysseus in a good spirit first, then the growth would not have seemed as prevalent. Odysseus seems to see the light when he finds out that he will be sailing home. He is tested first when Poseidon nearly kills him off the coast of Scheria, the first island he reaches. The Odyssey says, “and trapped within that backwash of the brine, Odysseus would have died before his time had not gray-eyed Athena counseled him” (Odyssey by Mandelbaum, 109). Athena allows Odysseus to experience the storm, but not die. She knows that it will make him stronger for it. There is an old saying, which goes along with this situation, “what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger.”…

    Leadership In The Odyssey

    • 575 Words
    • 3 Pages

Similar to most Homeric heroes, Odysseus wants to obtain glory and recognition for his courageous deeds. Though he would often take it too far and become arrogant, confidence is hugely important in leadership. At certain times, however, he would pompously ignore someone’s advice or act how he wanted, regardless of the consequences of his choices. The best example of this is when he intentionally hollered back to the Cyclops who he was as he was leaving. The result of this is that he brought calamity on himself as well as his men due to the relationship that Poseidon and the Cyclops had. However, once he reaches Ithaca, the way he bides his time and disguises himself as a beggar shows how he has developed and changed. Instead, he could have simply rushed home and declared himself before the extremely hostile suitors (“change”). “He is not the same glory-hungry individual who often committed rash and rather vacuous actions in order to gain kudos(“change”).” More recently, the texts have proved that Odysseus has come a long way, learned a lot from past mistakes, and developed accordingly during the route of these…

He had to leave his loving wife and go out on the seas, see new things that he had never seen before and adventure to lands afar. Odysseus on his journey started out by going to many places out at sea. For example he went to a land where there were people known as the Lotus Eaters who ate a flower that caused them to never want to leave. He went to Calypso's island where he was very tempted to stay but had to leave to continue his adventure. One of the places he went however, was the Cyclops island. On this island he made many mistakes. He wanted to explore to much and was rash. One of the things that he learned was thinking on his feet. The Cyclops that was living on the island had Odysseus and his men trapped in a cave where he was going to eat them. Odysseus was able to poke the cyclops in the eye and ride under the bellies of the sheep that the cyclops kept right out of the cave. This quick thinking saved him and his crew. Odysseus learned that sometimes you need to think things through and not act rashley. This lesson that Odysseus learned from the cyclopes island was one that he used when he got back home. Part of his journey was seeing the blind prophet Tiresias and listening to his instructions. This skill of listening was used when he got back home to find his house filled with suitors. Part of Odysseus’s instructions was to make the men atone in blood which he did after he devised a well thought out plan, something that he learned after the trial with the cyclops. His journey shaped him, his journey made him a better leader, and his journey helped him get to his wife once…

We can see that kind of quality in Odysseus. He is not egotistic and never thinks for his own benefit especially faced with some problems. When his men are trapped in Circe’s house, he follows to save his men even Eurylochus implores him not to go. He replies “Eurylochus, you can stay here and eat and drink beside the hollow black ship: I must go, however: I cannot forgo a task so necessary- this I owe”.(Homer 199). He knows that it is dangerous for him to go and save his men but as a responsible leader, he decides to save people. His speech shows his courage and sacrifice for his people. He also shows his sacrifice while he was in Cyclops cave. He binds three sheep for one comrade but for him, he only uses one…

During Odysseus’ journey in ‘The Odyssey’, Odysseus runs into a couple problems. He leaves home ready to fight in the Trojan War. Although he had plans on coming home, he never made it home. His wife Penelope and his son Telemachus assumed that Odysseus was dead. It was not until Athena came to Telemachus and gave him everything he needed to make it to his dad. What Telemachus did not know was that Odysseus wanted to come home, but he could not because he was being held prisoner on an island named Ogygia. Odysseus wants nothing more to return home and see his lovely wife Penelope.…

In the Odyssey, the world was entirely different then. It was ancient Greek times, where people walked around half-nude, and where people were advancing skills into the arts and had just invented the Olympic games. But, personally, from human nature, I believe there were certainly things that Odysseus himself would’ve wanted to change. For example, when he had finally returned to Ithaca, he had to challenge all of his wife’s suitors in order to get her back. While he accomplished that goal, it’s most likely that he had wished that the situation never escalated to go to those lengths. Therefore, his want to change the world carries on to our present…

In Book V, Odysseuss is being held against his will on an island with a nymph called Capyspso. Upon Zeus summoning Hermes to retrieve Odysseus from Calypso, Odysseus is offered the almost irrestible abiloity to become immortal and live forever, for as long as he chooses never to return home to his family. With this offer Odysseus’ only desire are to return home home to his family, therefore rejected the offer of Calypso. Odysseus, knowing the despair and troubles that await him upon his return home, is adamant in his decision. The point that Homer was trying to make with Odysseus’ decision was that of true moral to the character portrayed by Odysseus. Throughout the Book Odysseus is portrayed as being a hero and doing the right thing morally…
