Ode to the West Wind, the single most renowned and anthologized of Shelley’s poem, presents him as the visionary idealist and romantic revolutionary who makes a fervent plea to the greatest of natural forces – the west wind – to disseminate his message of reform and change among mankind. As is evident from his poem such as “Queen Mab”, “Alastor”, and “The Revolt of Islam”, Shelley was a fervent critic of all restricting and corrupting institutions, civil, religious and marital. But his romanticism lies not merely in his rebellious and visionary zeal, but also in his mythopoeic imagination and in his use of nature imagery.
The mythopoeic praise of a natural force, the west wind, begins in the first stanza. Shelley describes how the west wind drives away the dead leaves of trees like an enchanter driving away the undesired ghost. Yet, the west wind is not merely a destroyer but also a preserver. Not only does it drive the dead leaves but also the seeds which too seem to be endowed with life. They lie dormant within the soil, like corpses within their graves, for the entire winter it is only after that the ensuing spring, which they will spring to life, a new and revitalized life.
If the mythopoeic nature imagery in the first stanza is about the art with graves, plain and hill, the second is said in the air, in the steeped sky. Air and water, which jointly produced clouds thus resemble trees whose boughs entangled by the storm, shake off their leaves. Nature here is anthromorphic again, as the clouds resemble the ‘uplifted’ hair of a fierce Maenad, the inebriated female devotee of Bacchus, the god of wine. Here, too, Nature is destroyer as well as a creator, for the fierce commotion in the clouds lives to life – sustaining rain.

    The most prominent theme of this work is “nature” (Puchner et al. 896:1). Shelley writes, “The sea-bloomers and oozy woods which wear/ The sapless foliage of the ocean, know” (974:39-40. Shelley uses nature as a less scary way to talk about being dragged under. Shelley also touches on the nature theme when he says, “Oh! Lift me as a wave, a lead, a cloud!” (975; 53): by stating this Shelley is praying to escape the weight of death. The theme of “revolution” (Puchner et al. 896; 1) is also in the writing; however this “revolution” is a rotation in life instead of a political uprising. Through his use of the seasons, “Autumn” (973; 1), “Spring” (973: 9), “Summer” (974: 29), and “Winter” (975; 70), Shelley shows a parallel between the revolution of a year and the revolution of the human life. Shelley ends his work by stating, “If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind?” (975; 70): this reminds the reader that even though life will soon end the rebirth is soon to follow. I think that through the use of nature as a theme allows the work to be lighter and less morbid.     “The Sound of the Sea” consists of fourteen lines and a particular rhyme scheme (abba abba cde cde). This ode uses the imagination man has to sense the unseen. For example, in the first line of Hymn to Intellectual Beauty, Shelley introduces the mysterious: The awful shadow of some unseen Power. (723) From the very beginning, the poem features one of the aspects of a Romantic poem. The unseen Power creates awe in the readers mind. The word awful means in awe of to this unseen Power. He uses concrete language to emphasize that this unseen visitor is of great power since he capitalizes the word power in this poem.
