Odd Girl Out

Once upon a time in my health class we watched a sad movie called Odd Girl Out. It’s about girls getting bullied in school, and at home. It’s a somber and tragic movie that makes you take a step back and think about bullying. It makes you understand what bullying can do to someone and the pain they can get from it. It clearly distinguishes the roles of the bully scene. A major role is the Queen-Bee, and her name is Stacy. She has the ability to drop a girl’s confidence with just one look. She is mean to everyone, because she insecure about herself. Sometimes she has a reason, but usually she doesn’t. She attacks Vanessa because her friends told her that Vanessa stole Tony. Is this a good enough reason? It’s your judgment. The Second main role is the target, Vanessa. She was attacked by Stacy for “stealing” Tony. Stacy and Nikki were evil to her, even though she’s supposed to be their best friend. It’s heart breaking because they made fun of her weight and her hair it hurt her so much that she just gave into peer pressure. She cut her hair and stopped eating. In the end she overcame her fears and stood up for herself. Nikki is the wanna-bee, she is jealous of Vanessa. She is evil to Vanessa because Vanessa is closer to Stacy than she is. She doesn’t have a direct problem with her, but does have one. Her follows is Tiffany, she is the main banker. She just follows Nikki; she doesn’t have an issue with Vanessa. She just wants to be in Stacy’s group; it’s pathetic. Finally the last and the most important role is the savior; Emily. She saves Vanessa because Stacy bullies her too, so she knows what it was like. There was one main way she saved her; by being a friend. That’s all she needed at the time. Vanessa had no friends, and Emily was; she saved her. Personal Experience; I’ve had a few. One of my most recent ones was here in school. I was being bullied in Young Living by these girls. They were saying that

Juno chose Mark and Vanessa from the Penny Saver because of the look and legitimacy of their picture. Juno liked the fact that they didn’t use a fake background in the picture. Just from the looks of the ad Juno made the perception that this couple would be the perfect parents for her unborn baby, she doesn’t seem to realize how odd it is for the couple to advertise for a baby in the Penny Saver. As the movie progresses, we soon find out they were not so “perfect” after all. Juno’s initial perceptions of the couple change as they both reveal parts of their private selves throughout the movie.…

To display what I have learnt and show my knowledge of representations in the media of bullying I decided to produce a short film to show different aspects of bullying, using my investigation to help me to conform to the typical representations of bullying in this day and age. I took inspiration from different anti-bullying campaigns videos and pictures on the internet where the bully is shown to be bigger and stronger than the victim; therefore I took the same approach to my short film that I produced. I used the different types of bullying within my film with the bully shown to be angry and telling the victim what to do then the bully follows the victim around and eventually leading to the bully using physical actions to hurt the victim. In many of the different video’s I viewed on various websites they were all trying to tackle bullying many within the children to teenage category this is because most of bullying nowhere days takes place in schools, colleges where 47% of bullying is taken place in the classroom, 37% in the corridors and 27% outside of schools & colleges and through the internet where nearly 43% of kids have been bullied online through social media, this is why I took the same approach to showcase the bullying between younger people.…

By putting cameras and audio equipment in places where children congregate, schools can protect children from bullying and solve the problem. It is our responsibility to keep our children safe even if it is from other children. Bullying happens every day it happens in school, on the school bus, on the way home from school, in the bathrooms, in the hallways, even in the classrooms under the teachers noses. People may think that this is someone else’s problem that it is not their concern but it is everyone’s problem. While doing the research for this paper I came across this story written in a book by (Cheryl E. Sanders; Gary D. Phye) in the Kaplan Library. It was around February of 2003, it was about a 13 year old girl who was attending a middle school in a Denver suburb, she had to change schools for concern of her life (Kirksey, 2003). That wasn’t the first time she believed she was going to die. At the age of 9-years-old, she lost one of her legs to cancer. If that wasn’t a big enough scare for a child her age. As a young amputee, she should have made friends easily and obtained compassion from her peers, but in its place she faced bullying. An ‘‘under- ground’’ group of several girls used vocal hostility to terrorize her. Directing blasphemous and frightening messages such as ‘‘die, bitch, die’’ and ‘‘you better watch your back’’ via a website on the Internet as well as corresponding with her at school were the major settings for the bullying. After 5 months of living amidst this horror, she (with her mother’s reassurance) elected to depart the community middle school and register at another school. They wished to find a pleasing atmosphere where she could thrive, learn, and feel secure. Regrettably, statistics designate that this young girl and others like her are liable to encounter the identical antagonism at a fresh school (Beale & Scott, 2001).…

The subject of girl aggression or bullying needs to be more looked upon among girls of any age. Girls are pushed aside as they are thought of going through a “phase” if they spread rumors or shoot dirty looks. Boys draw more attention since they go resolve their problems directly by fighting or even calling someone out. Adults usually go correct their fights and problems to show them it’s not the right way to be. The girls are left alone as they continue picking on each other secretly. Others girls may fight directly too, but this is rarely seen in most schools.…
