When I first got into oceanography I didn’t know anything about marshes.   But after a while in call I started to learn a little more.   I’ll admit I didn’t care much for the subject at first but it got a little more interesting after a while.   At first I didn’t know that marshes were like a nursery for different types of organisms, especially mosquitoes.   The marshes are also like a sponge because they suck up all the nasty stuff from the water, and they filter the water also.   The marsh is also home to many animals and organisms that can’t live or be seen anywhere else.   The marsh also helps protect the mainland by absorbing and blocking storms like hurricanes from hitting the mainland.
Tides are another thing I didn’t know much about.   All I knew about tide was that there was a high and low tide and you wanted to go fishing around high tide.   I didn’t know that the tidal day is 50 minutes longer than a normal day.   So the tidal day is always 50 minutes later than it was the day before.   And I also didn’t know that high and low tide were called spring and neap tides.   I was also interested by how animals plan things around tides like when they are going to feed, or like these crabs on Christmas island wait for night and high tide to shake their eggs off and into the ocean.   I also learned that a tsunami is not the biggest wave like somebody might think, tides are actually waves and they are the biggest waves in the world.   And tides are also determined by the moon, because it is the moon’s gravitational force that shifts the water on the earth.   When the moon is full the high tide is higher than when the moon is in its 3rd quarter phase.   Now that I know more about these subjects I’m more aware of them and I can make more people aware of them.   And I can plan a kayaking trip better too.
