There is a problem in our world today. This problem is called ocean acidification. Ocean

acidification is a process caused by increasing man made carbon dioxide emissions.

This process is making the oceans more acidic. Ocean acidification could affect

humans. With such decline of fish and shellfish stocks due to ocean acidification will

impact an big role in the human source of protein. millions of people could be affected.

Ocean acidification affects crabs snails and sea urchins. These marine organisms need

calcium and carbonate that is in sea water to build their shells or skeletons. As the pH

decreases carbonate becomes less available making it hard for the animals to secrete

calcium carbonate to form their skeletal material. Polluted runoff and fossil fuel

emissions threaten the lobsters oysters bay scallops and mussels that support new

England's iconic fishing communities. California's sea urchin’s are struggling to adapt to

the acidic atmosphere. In east coast estuaries clams and mussels are getting a double ean dose of carbon dioxide. Red snapper, shrimp, and shelled fish face an uncertain future in

the gulf of mexico. relatively soon after carbon dioxide is released it creates a carbonic

acid. Humans release fossil fuels and emissions that pollute the air.It sinks down in the

water and makes the ocean acidic.I think we could prevent this from happening by not

driving everywhere and walk, or you could stop releasing methane.

This shows how she took the time to compose this article for any type of person interested in how ocean acidification would affect marine mammals. Winner explains what ocean acidification means and how sound travels through it to give the reader a strong understanding of what ocean acidification means and how it could possible harm the animals, even if the reader has no previous knowledge. She also dumbs the information down for the common person through the “pillow effect”. Once the reader has a basic understanding of ocean acidification and sound, Winner goes on to explain how the marine chemists in 2008 thought the mammals would be harmed. Soon after, Winner introduces Duda and his research experiment with the WHOI and explains how the chemists were wrong in their thoughts. Winner gave quantitative information to help strengthen the readers knowledge of the research. This information will be useful in my final paper because I wish to discuss the affects ocean acidification has on the ocean itself and its inhabitants. This article gives a fairly simple definition of ocean acidification, which I can quote in my final paper so that people without knowledge on this topic will be able to follow along. This article will also be useful in the sense that it gives information believed by many, and then falsifies it. That falsification will help show what ocean acidification truly affects and does not affect allowing me to strengthen my…

When carbon dioxide ( CO2) reacts with water ( H20), carbonic acid ( H2CO3) is formed. Carbonic acid, then releases Hydrogen ions (H+), which bonds with other molecules in the surrounding area. Specifically, some of these hydrogen ions (H+) combine with carbonate ions ( CO3-2) and Bicarbonate (HCO3) ions are formed. Thus ocean acidification decreases carbonate ions; This causes a problem for marine ecosystems, because carbonate ions are essential factor to marine life.…

Ocean acidification impacts marine organisms to varying gradations. For example, photosynthetic algae and seagrasses may benefit from higher CO2 conditions as they require CO2 to live much like plants on land. On the contrary, studies have shown that a more acidic environment has a negative effect on calcifying species, such as oysters, clams, sea urchins, corals, calcareous plankton and many more. When shelled organisms are at risk, the entire food web is also at risk. Currently, over a billion people worldwide rely on food from the ocean as their primary source of protein. Many jobs and economies throughout the world depend on the fish and shellfish in our…

    Ocean Acidification

The concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere has risen from 320 parts per million in the early 20th century to an astonishing 380 parts per million at the beginning of the 21st century. These drastic changes to earth’s atmosphere and environment have resulted in numerous ripple effects including the acidification of the ocean. The ocean is a complex mixture of chemicals primarily consisting of water, sodium chloride and trace elements of magnesium, sulfur, potassium, calcium and bromine. Calcium is the most important constituent as it is important in sustaining marine life and plays a role in the chemical balance of the ocean. The acidification of the ocean, precipitated by global warming, is causing a change in the chemical interactions of these various ecological systems. These systems rely on chemical reactions where the pH of the ocean is within a certain range and concentrations of carbon dioxide are at acceptable levels. The increase in carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere has allowed more of it to dissolve in the ocean causing a drastic change in pH and carbonic acid concentrations. These changes could result in the loss of various marine life and ecosystems which once lost cannot be recovered. Acidification of the ocean is a serious concern and if allowed to continue could result in irreversible and permanent changes to ocean ecosystems and marine life.…

Climate change’s equally evil twin seems to be ocean acidification. 25 percent of the CO2 dissolves into the ocean instead of being in the air. When the industrial era started over 525 billion tons of CO2 were absorbed (22 million tons per day). Scientists at first thought that we were good because it warms the planet, but that’s not the case. The ocean is becoming more acidic than ever because of the CO2. 200 years later the water temperature increased by 30 percent. Rivers usually keep the ocean stable because they have to carry all of the chemicals, but they haven’t been able to keep up with all of this CO2. As a matter of fact some of these animals’ shells dissolve in this acidic seawater which doesn’t help at all. With…

Oceans, lakes and rivers absorb 30 to 40% of the carbon dioxide produced by the human population. Ocean acidification has been a rising issue for the last three decades, and oceanographers have been studying the carbon dioxide effects on the ocean throughout that time. It is becoming increasingly problematic because the levels of carbon dioxide being emitted into the environment are greater. In the last 200 years, the ocean has become 30% more acidic because as more carbon dioxide is dissolved into the water, the more acidic the water gets. This is destroying the marine life that has had a stable pH level of ocean water for thousands of years. The oysters have been highly affected by the ocean acidification.…

In The Truth about Ocean “Acidification”, by Patrick Moore, the term “ocean acidification” has been fabricated, and people do not see the positive effects it has on marine life. In 2003, many articles on ocean acidification were published. Moore challenges one of the article’s hypothesis that corals will cease to grow by mid-century, and ocean acidification will impact fisheries worldwide. Moore emphasizes that there are five key reasons why the ocean acidification narrative is a fabrication. First, the concentration of Co2 was much higher in the earth’s atmosphere during the Cambrian period. Next, most of the invertebrates with the ability to produce calcium carbonate armor are capable of rapid adaptation. Third, there are two distinct physiological…

The issue that I have selected to investigate is Ocean Acidification. Ocean Acidification is an important issue because of the effects it has on specific marine ecosystems. Oceans are a place that Carbon dioxide from the atmosphere settles. The carbon dioxide in our Atmosphere has increased drastically and oceans are currently absorbing about one quarter of the carbon dioxide that humans are emitting. This issue is having a chemical reaction with our oceans that is reducing the seawater pH causing the oceans to become more…
