Neenah, WI 54956 Dear Council Members: The attached report, requested by the Neenah City Council dated November 14, describes the states negative health issues it has on the citizens of Wisconsin due to the recent spike in obesity. We believe you will find the results of this study useful in evaluating future health development in Wisconsin. This study was designed to examine solutions to end obesity and obesity health related issues in the state of Wisconsin: ● Current obesity rates in Wisconsin
● Current health related issues due to obesity
● Indirect and direct effects of obesity
● Causes of obesity Primary research consisted of Dr. Dhurandhar and Dr. Atkinson, testing laboratory chickens along with testing Wisconsin and Florida citizens for the Ad­36 virus.
Secondary research consisted of Dr. Benjamin Caballero of Johns Hopkins University.
Research also includes state records of obesity rates and health effects due to obesity.
Results of this research is discussed more fully in this report, indicating that obesity in adults and children can come to an end in Wisconsin. We would be pleased to discuss this report and its conclusion with you at your request.

Department of Health and Human Services (USDHHS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there has been a dramatic increase in obesity in the United States over the past 20 years. Obesity epidemic has affected every part of the world. When speaking about United States, more than 72 million adults are obese and there is not a single state that has an obesity rate less than 15 % (CDC Vitalsigns 2010). Among all Americans Obesity has been directly linked to hypertension, diabetes, cancer, depression and many other health problems. Each year, approximately 400.000 deaths result from obesity and its complications and costs the national economy nearly $122.9 billion annually (Menifield 2008). In addition, as of 2004, the proportion of obese adults in the U,S. reached 32% of the total population. Among adolescents, obesity has increased to 17.1% of the population between the 1999-2004 periods (Menifield 2008). This increase in prevalence has made obesity a threat to public health in United States. There are various reasons of obesity such as behavior, environment and genetic factors. One of the causes of obesity is energy imbalance. This means eating too many calories compared to physical activity. As we know that, nowadays people spend more time watching T.V and playing video games. Moreover food portion size has also increased not only at home but also in many restaurants. In addition, environment and behavior play a large role causing people to be overweight. People make decision base on their culture, values and beliefs. For example, in some culture it is not important for women to exercise or women are not allowed to go for a walk. Many community lack sidewalks, parks and public activity area and that may influence their activity level. Science indicates that genetics shows a role in obesity. Genes can directly cause obesity in disorders such as Bardet-Biedl syndrome and Prader-Willi…

    A recent study by the International Journal of Obesity & Related Metabolic Disorders published an article on this epidemic. The objective, using standardized international definitions, was to find the prevalence and trends in obesity in the United States. Although they found that obesity rates from a BMI of above 30 has increased over time, and will keep increasing, BMI from 25 to 29.9 has not. “RESULTS: For men and women aged 20–74 y, the age-adjusted prevalence of BMI 25.0–29.9 showed little or no increase over time”(Flegal, Carroll, Kuczmarski, Johnson, n.Pg). The research was executed by K M Flegal, M D Carroll, R J Kuczmarski and C L Johnson. Ms Flegal is an American epidemiologist and is a senior scientist at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Dr. Carroll is an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at the Stanford Medical University. Mr Kuczmarski has written 38 articles involving obesity, public health, growth in young children and articles involving blood pressure in the United States. All of his 38 articles have been published on the US National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Johnson is a plastic surgeon with over 6 years of medical experience around the world, and graduated from Harvard Medical School, and holds his Masters of Science in Biochemistry from Oxford University. He also completed a fellowship at the University of Massachusetts, and specialises in the use of…
