Problem Solving for Obesity in the United States
There are some ways to prevent the fast food weight gain. Fast food restaurants have started introducing healthier ways to have a meal on the go. They have added yogurt, fruit, baked potatoes, and salads as side orders in the place of the greasy french fries we all love. They also have a larger variety of meals now. Most fast food chains have salads for a main meal. Also kids now have the option to get juice or milk instead of the traditional soda to drink. Some restaurants even advertise calories and fat grams for meals. It is understandable and realistic that everyone must eat on the go sometimes, but we can choose better and more nutritious foods when we must do so. This is just a few of many ways to help improve our fast food habits.
Another problem that has led to the rise of obesity in children is the use of TV and video games. In the recent years this has been taken to the extreme. Children are not outside playing any longer. When they get home from school it is straight to the TV for their favorite show or the Wii, playstation, or X-box. These things have taken the place of bike riding, rollerblading, basketball, and other outside games children play that contributes to daily exercise. Now kids are considered to be “couch potatoes”.
This can be prevented by parents sending their kids outside and cutting back on TV/video game time. There should be time limits set on how much TV and video games children can have daily. Studies show this should be set back to maximal 1.5hrs a day. Children should have chores that require activity and responsibility. The Wii fit has been introduced to children and this also will add some exercise into their lifestyles. It is a video game, but it is done by movement. You can play tennis, bowl, play baseball, fish, the list goes on and on, but all of these things are done with movement and exercise.
