Obesity and People
Fast Food, Fast Calories, and Fast After life Society should consider the physical and emotional problems of obesity in our nation. Obesity is defined as an excess proportion of total body fat. American society has become increasingly obese, characterized by environments that promote increased food intake, unhealthy foods, and physical inactivity. Our nation increasingly has become consumers of a fast food diet. It is so simple to just pick up food on the go and not deal with the hassle of cooking and cleaning up afterwards. What our nation needs to acknowledge is the health risks they will obtain if they do not acquire a healthy life style. Overweight people are affected by physical and emotional health problems. A few of the most common physical problems related to obesity include asthma, hypertension, polycystic ovary syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and sleep problems. Other known risk factors are coronary heart disease, stroke, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, and some forms of cancer. These health conditions are becoming more and more common. Society needs to promote this generation towards a healthier life style. Furthermore, schools need to better educate kids on the detrimental factors of obesity beforehand. In addition obesity is also associated with complications of pregnancy, menstrual irregularities, hirsutism, stress incontinence, increased surgical risk and increased mortality. Not only does obesity affect the body physically but also emotionally. One of the most painful aspects of obesity is the emotional suffering it causes. Psychological disorders such as depression are developed as a result of obesity. Emotional health problems include depression and anorexia. In most cases depression affects teenagers who are enrolled in high school. Obese teenagers go through abuse and are put in an image that they don’t belong. Many people are unaware of all the risks acquired with obesity and need to be educated so as to move forward in the fight against obesity. It is unknown what exactly causes severe obesity. However, there are many factors contributing to the development including genetic, hereditary, environmental, and metabolic and eating disorders. Intake of steroids and hypothyroidism also cause weight gain. Some illnesses, including Cushing’s disease and polycystic ovary syndrome, may lead to obesity or weight gain. What lies behind obesity varies from person to person and affects each one differently. Overall, obesity occurs when a person consumes more calories than he or she burns; for most people it boils down to eating too much and exercising too little. Balance and moderation is the key to overcome these factors. Other contributing factors that play a role in obesity include age, gender, and physiological factors. More commonly, demanding careers and stressful lifestyles people face today prevents them from finding the time to exercise and plan nutritious meals. All of these factors contribute to the generating cause of obesity. To determine if someone’s weight has increased his or her health risks, there are various methods based on height and weight or by the measurements of body fat. The most common way doctors determine obesity is a formula based on height and weight, called the body mass index or BMI. The majority of the time this scale is accurate, however, in some cases the scale is inaccurate for individuals with adequate muscle mass or large bone structures. Adults with a BMI between 25 and 29.9 are considered overweight; a person with a BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese; a BMI of 40 or more is considered morbid obese. Another way to calculate BMI is to use the pinch test, in which you pinch certain parts of the human body and measure it with a caliber. A person who is Morbid obese is especially likely to have serious health problems. It is very beneficial to understand individual body mass as it gives a lot of information about your body.
Obesity has increased globally in large numbers over a short period of time. Today, one in three American adults are considered to be obese. Obesity is a growing problem that is getting way out of hand. The large numbers of obesity may be the leading cause of the increased medical care throughout the nation. Obesity is, however, the second leading cause of preventable death in the United States. At young ages children are putting on excessive weight due to bad eating habits. Obesity is a picked up trait, so in most cases the whole family is affected. Obesity affects people of different financial backgrounds; it occurs among the rich as well as the poor. People on a tight budget will eat poorly due to the fact that the food they can afford is mass-produced and industrialized. On the other hand, people with wealth sometimes take food for granted. The statistic numbers have increased more and more through each generation. Our American society places great emphasis on physical appearance. Society equates attractiveness with slimness and muscularity. The images put in magazines and seen on TV show an unrealistic portrayal of the human body. Our society idolizes the perfect body; this pressure put on people to look a certain way causes the majority of people to have a low self-esteem. People who are overweight are sometimes stereotyped as being lazy and gluttonous. They face discrimination at work, at school, while being interviewed for a job, and in social situations. Feelings of rejection, shame, and depression are common to people that have to face the struggles of obesity. Everyday things are a challenge to somebody that is self conscious; it is a struggle to meet people, to make friends, or get out in front of a crowd. One person at a time, society needs to step back from their judging ways and consider the emotional battle these people have to fight. As a result of the discrimination people feel, they will do almost anything to change their appearance. Unfortunately, there are many unhealthy diets out there to assist people in getting off that unwanted weight; in desperation people will try almost anything to put off the pounds. People don’t know what path to take with all the dietary supplements, diets and surgeries. The most healthy and simple way to get to a healthy weight is to just simply eat right based on variety and moderation while doing some type of exercise each day. Obesity is a struggle with many obstacles to overcome. Being overweight impacts how people feel about themselves. People that struggle with their weight are more likely to keep to themselves about it, but the hurt is still there. The emotional issues of obesity consist of depression, anxiety, irritability, distorted body image, binge eating disorder, shyness, and the motivation to not give up. A person that is overweight commonly feels isolated and secluded. People are very sensitive to the way people perceive them; if people are treated as if they are worthless or a disappointment they will in turn think that they are and act accordingly. If people were not singled out for their weight by society, it may change the effects of obesity. Society needs to be educated on the effects of the choices they make so they can alleviate themselves from the serious physical, emotional and social consequences in the future. The good news is that even modest weight loss can improve or prevent the health problems associated with obesity. Our society is responsible to prevent our next generation from becoming obese at the beginning, because once the onset of obesity has come; it is a negative cycle that is difficult to break. For example McDonalds have changed their happy meals that now have lower calories and fat. They also provide side servings of fruits and vegetables. Society needs to stress and prioritize healthy choices by having more family dinners and making healthy snack choices to keep our nation healthy. Furthermore, fitness classes should be an additional class required to graduate from high school although this might be very controversial. The initial focus is to enable people of all backgrounds to direct their path towards a healthy life style. We need to acknowledge the efforts currently being made to provide quality services that identify, refer, advise, and treat those at risk. All things considered, if society would just make the extra effort and go that extra mile to moderate their diet; they would, overall, suffer fewer consequences.

We the people of the United States have a problem in our midst, Obesity. While most recognize the importance to stop it, few can agree on a viable method to fight it. It is a problem, no doubt, but it is a problem that lies within every single american. That being said, only people themselves can do something about it, the government can’t simply pass a few laws and put an end to this epidemic. It is not the government’s job to keep people healthy, the U.S. is a democratic Republic and if it intends to stay that way, government will stay within its boundaries, and out of the personal lives of the citizens who consider themselves free.…

Obesity is a condition of having excess body weight. Today in the USA, 97 million adults are overweight, meaning that 1 out of 3 people we come across in our everyday lives may be obese. However, it is also important to understand that being overweight does not mean one is obese. Many people throw around the word ‘obese’ and are ignorant to the difference of being obese or just simply being overweight. Obesity is having too much body weight, as where people may be overweight due to high levels of muscles or water in their body. In recent times, obesity among Americans has almost doubled, causing the USA to have the highest obesity rate. There are many variables that have contributed to this rapid growth such as fast food restaurants becoming increasingly more available and less expensive, automobiles becoming the number one form of transportation rather than walking or riding a bike, and other factors that promote inactivity such as the use of cell phones, email, etc. We ignore this problem and often look beyond these factors because we consider them “standard” in our lives. Although, before obesity rates spiked, fast food was not as unhealthy or cheap, driving an automobile was only possible for a select few, and technology did not exist like it does now. In order to eliminate such high obesity rates in America I believe we must raise awareness on the damages obesity can have on our well-being. In order to so, there should be a higher emphasis put on healthy living rather than promoting fast food and other habits that are harmful to our health. There are many more solutions to this problem such as raising the price of fast food or making it healthier, but many companies are not willing to make these changes. This is why I believe that it is very important that we make Americans aware of this problem. I would like to research this topic because I find it interesting how in a world as efficient as ours today, we are seeing new issues emerge such as obesity…

Obesity is defined as “a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health, leading to reduced life expectancy and/or increased health problems” (1). It is a huge problem in America and is an epidemic that is growing to enormous proportions. “Two out of every three adults are either overweight or obese. In addition, one out of every three children is either overweight or obese” (2). “It causes at least 300,000 needless deaths annually in the United States, and related healthcare costs top $100 billion” (3). This is an issue that not only affects our country, but extends worldwide, as well. So, the question at hand is what our responsibility is collectively as a nation, and particularly the government in turning this issue around for Americans?…

This shouldn’t come to a surprise to most, that America holds the number one position for obesity. (Wintrup) Not only Americans as a whole but the children. More than one of five children between the ages of 6 and 17 are considered overweight. This is something that needs to change immediately. There are too many health risks at stake for these young children including: diabetes, high blood pressure, depression, anxiety, and poor academic performance. (Alan) In 2005 a study found that children today may have shorter lives by two to five years than their parents because of obesity. (Palmer) Childhood obesity alone is not the only issue facing children today, although being overly large may prevent the child from living life to the fullest. However, the co-morbidities relating to childhood obesity are the real killers. Hypertension, type 2 diabetes, respiratory ailments, sleep apnea, and depression are just some of the common problems linked directly to obesity in children (Henry). Others…

Americans are well aware of the fact that the United States has one of the world’s highest rates of obesity and that the country has gained the worldwide stereotype of being overweight. This all pertains to the term that has been a coined phrase within American society for the past few years—the American obesity epidemic. Despite the widespread knowledge that being obese or overweight can negatively affect one’s health, America’s rates of obesity continue to climb. In addition, there are many Americans who claim that obesity is simply a controllable factor and that there is reason to refer to the obese population as an epidemic. They claim, in fact, that there is no such thing as an obesity epidemic; and that America’s large percentage of people who are overweight is nothing to panic over or to consider as a dangerous plague. The fact is, however, obesity is quite a serious issue. Most recently in current events, it was stated that obesity has now surpassed smoking as the leading cause of preventable death in the United States of America. The smoking epidemic gained a great deal of publicity, leading to protest groups and awareness groups that all aimed to educate Americans about the health hazards associated with smoking; but now that obesity kills more people annually than smoking, it is clear that there is absolutely an obesity epidemic taking place within the United States and that is must be addressed, taken seriously, and combated through further education about health, fitness, and nutrition.…

Overweight and obese children are a major problem in the United States and the rates are unfortunately rising, especially in children. Obesity is the leading cause for health problems such as type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, gallstones, depression, anxiety, poor academic performance, and many other long-term health problems especially if obesity occurs early in life. I believe this is a social issue because the major causes of obesity are diet and lifestyle. In America, the diet consists of fried and greasy foods such as fast foods, the lifestyle lacks enough physical activities that are necessary to increase the metabolism and prevent weight gain that leads to obesity. The children of the United States spend much more time watching TV or playing video games than doing activities that include physical exercise, such as sports, running, hiking, biking, or even just walking.…

In the United States today, obesity has become an enormous problem. In the last 3 decades, the number of people overweight has increased dramatically. A study done by the Centers of Disease Control showed that since 1980, one third of our adult population has become overweight. America is the richest but also the fattest nation in the world and our obese backsides are the butt of jokes in every other country (Klein 28). The 1980s were a time when Americans suddenly started going crazy over dieting, jumping onto the treadmills, and buying prepackaged non-fat foods. However, while all of that was going on, the number of obese Americans began to increase. According to a report in the Journal of the American Medical Association, 58 million people in our country weigh over 20 percent of their body’s ideal weight. The article “Fat Times” states, “If this were about tuberculosis, it would be called an epidemic” (Elmer-Dewit 58). The eating habits of society have steadily become more harmful and have started to produce gluttonous children, over-indulgent adults, and a food industry set too much on satisfying our appetites.…

Childhood obesity has been a problem in the United States for quite some time now. Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and tripled in adolescents in the past 30 years (CDC 2). Overweight is defined as having excess body weight for a particular height from fat, muscle, bone, water, or a combination of these factors. Obesity is defined as having excess body fat. (CDC 6) This is becoming a major problem and it is only getting worse. In 2010, more than one-third of children and adolescents were overweight or obese. (CDC 1) These statistics are more than shocking to me. This is the reason why we have so many health issues in adults in the United States. Children and adolescents who are obese are likely to be obese as adults and are therefore more likely to have adult health problems such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, several types of cancer, and osteoarthritis.
