Obesity Among The 21st Century
The schools, malls and homes of the 21st century should not be filled with overweight, unhealthy children. Yet, that is the case as young children and adolescents continue to purchase and eat unhealthy, detrimental food—or “junk food.” It’s time for parents and children to make some life-improving changes! The causes of obesity are complex: genetic, biological, behavioral and also cultural factors all contribute to this serious problem. When a person eats more calories than the body can burn, obesity occurs because the excess calories consumed do not get burned and in turn converts to fat storage. Causes for childhood obesity are: poor eating habits, overeating, lack of exercise, family history of obesity, medical illness, medications, stressful life events or changes, family and peer problems, low self-esteem and depression or other emotional problems. The growing number of fast food chains are instigating conflicts between health promoting organizations and costsaving consumer products. These fast food chains try to save as much money and time as possible by producing food in an unhealthy yet edible and delicious way. In long terms, obesity will cause an increase in the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, breathing problems and even trouble in sleeping. Mentally and emotionally, obese children and adolescents tend to be less popular among their friends
and also have low self-esteem. Obese children and adolescents exhibit an increase in depression, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder. What are some solutions? A few restaurants and food chains have begun to alter their menus and food selections into healthier choices made with healthier and better quality ingredients.
