obama's free community college plan
Final Essay Prompt (Version 1) Recently President Obama proposed a plan to make two years of community college free to all students, but just community college alone. This does not include state or university colleges.
In my opinion this plan of creating a two year free general education system for community colleges should be instituted for the simple reason that if you choose to pursue a higher education such as state college or university you should pay the tuition but for those that choose the route of going to a community college because of personal reasons such as those that can’t decide if they want to go straight to college or can’t afford it should be allowed those two free years to decide if they want to continue their education while going to school for free and gaining at least an associates degree during those two years of college. With this new plan announced on january 20th of 2015, the proposal will make two years of community college free to the students that handle their work with care and responsibility, not just anyone that wishes to use the government's money to their liking. This proposal lets students earn the first half of their bachelor’s degree also known as their general education and they will also learn the skills needed in the major of their choice with no cost, but this plan requires help on everyone's part, students will be needed to stay on task, take responsibility for their education and stay on track to graduate. In a recent article about the proposal via
Whitehouse.gov it is said

that “If all states participate, an estimated 9 million students could benefit.” With most students benefiting from this new proposal, a student on average can save up to $3,800 in tuition per year. With signing this new proposal into law, it will encourage more students to graduate.
Thousands of eager and willing to learn students enter community

There is an ongoing debate about whether in state colleges should be free to attend. Personally, I think that it should be. The majority of Americans are of the working class, and therefore can’t afford to put themselves through college without its debt following them for the rest of their lives. Making state colleges free to attend would just make easier the lives of those ambitious working class citizens.…

College education being free, has been a topic that many debates, or come across often. Several countries do provide free college education, but this system won’t work in the United States especially in the highly populated regions. Therefore, making Community Colleges free, our taxes will rise, we will have overcrowded classrooms, and underpaid professors, all leading to poor quality of education. As stated by Mary Clare Amselem in her article ‘Free Community College is a bad deal for taxpayers and students’ , community colleges generally have a poor academic rate. Consequently, the education level for job employment will also increase.…

If one looks at the data, the bigger problem is that many students don’t finish college. “Only about 55 percent of students graduate six years after starting,” Bob Luebke (a writer for the Civitas Institute.) The problem is not access but completion. So why do people drop out of college? For the most part, money is not the biggest problem; it’s usually factors like family issues, or transportation. Providing free tuition to institutions that graduate only a small amount over 50 percent of their students does not make economic sense. Also, if college tuition does become free for students, colleges will attract more young people who are not suited for college and will most likely drop out as well as more students that will major in fields with little or no market…

In this act, Sanders suggests the elimination of undergraduate tuition in both two-year and four-year public institutions. Public colleges receive a total of nearly 70 billion dollars each year in tuition to present the students with a variety of resources and administrators each year. Without this funding, colleges would not be able to function. To make up for the lost funds in tuition, the legislation would impose a Robin Hood tax on Wall Street to obtain 45 billion dollars for higher education, and the states would cover the other 33 percent of the cost through a tax of their choosing. The individual state would receive the federal funds and would be responsible for the spending on higher education. To protect students and ensure the quality of the education, students and states must meet certain federal requirements to qualify. Under the College for All Act, the price of college would plummet without significant destruction of higher education institutions from lack of funds. In fact, after colleges eliminate tuition, Sanders plans to increase the federal grants to the colleges to expand academic courses and increase the number of instructional faculties. Sanders’ plan would emphasize the importance of education while decreasing college tuition to make higher education more…

    Why College Is Not Free

Free college is not free because “it simply shifts costs from students to taxpayers and caps tuition at zero”(Kelly). Free college is paid through tax dollars and the more people that want to attend these “free colleges” the more taxes United States citizens have to pay. Public funds are challenged to keep up with the amount of students choosing these colleges, so schools are turning applications down. Many community colleges have had to turn people down, for example, “California’s community colleges turned away 600,000 students” (Kelly). If college tuition was not so expensive, then there would be fewer people going to free college and public funds would be able to keep up.…

Two years of FREE community college! In theory, this sounds like a really good idea, and would give numerous people, who would otherwise not have the option to continue his education, the opportunity to get a good start on his college degree. President Obama has proposed a two year, free community college plan. in his speech given at Pellissippi State College in Knoxville, Tennessee, President Obama stated, a college education should be “as free and universal as high school is today” (Korte). High school is not free. Tax paying citizens pay for children to get a high school education. College should be more affordable for those who wish to pursue a higher education, but the President’s plan will not work; there are too many expenses that would not allow the nation to support every college student who attends a two year college. There are too many questions and concerns about offering two years of free higher education to everyone. College is not for everyone, and certainly will…

However, it isn’t worth the money right now for the United States because we are in about $1.3 trillion dollars in debt. The article “Free Tuition: Laudable, Unaffordable. Editorial.” By Orlando Sentinel, mention that if the federal government has the money to actually spend on students they would be successfully prepared, but they aren’t ready. In reality United States is in so much debt according to the article we simply just can’t spend billions of dollars to have free tuition for two years. We already give low income students free money to just have a seat. Orlando Sentinel also states that President Obama still hasn’t mentioned anymore about the financial or any other details about this proposal. But he only mention that Washington will pay seventy-five percent of the cost, and depending on the states, they would pay twenty-five percent. Community college shouldn’t be free because some schools may lack the organization it should and how many students are attending that school. Plus United States can’t afford every students having a free education at a Community…

From 2008 to the last year of being president of the United States Barack Obama has made a difference not just for the country but the community itself we live in. Serving in his 2 terms so far, the community of the country have seen the changes that has come to benefit for the U.S. in the future. From simply dropping the percentage of the unemployment rate every year to making history by legalizing gay marriage we must come to the realization that Obama is simply trying to adjust to the present time and give recognition to current issues so that the country's future is bright and better. So with his idea of trying to make community college free some believe that trying to promote that idea will only create future conflict such as a financial crisis and students competing to be enrolled in community rather than fully focusing on enrolling in a university after high school. Noticing those conflicts those critics fail to understand the benefits it’ll bring for students attending during and after school. Rather than disapproving the idea, the community of the country should be promoting to have community college free for all students because of conflicts they face after high school such having issues financial to also…

Being a high school senior it would be amazing for college to be free, but if we really think about it. There is a lot more going into it than just free community college. The money has to come from somewhere if President wants to make it free for students to go to community. A lot of people do not think about the consciences or the aftermath of this plan. They are just paying attention to solving one problem, but do not stop and think about the rest of the problems that are going to raise when they make going to community college for free. As a student, I strongly disagree with making community college free because it is going to cause more problems.…

Being provided a free community college may be a dream; that may be confronting reality in a very present timeline. In order to properly for vote for this topic, the general public should have a basic understanding of the notion of free community college. One must understand that this plan accommodates obvious benefits that may be able to improve society by attempting to have their graduates blossom throughout America. Conversely, this objective may become too ambitious due to a multivariable problem that may require a multivariable solution in order to minimize the consequences. College as a free educational endeavor may spawn more consequences than probable solutions. Consequences that may occur as a result of free college education are…

Community college gives a person the opportunity to decide if college is the right choice without incurring debt that possibly could be triple the cost of a private university and for those who would like to give it a chance before ultimately making the decision to enter into the workplace. Going to a community college allows a student to explore various ideas and thoughts about career path and life choices. This is especially helpful for the undecided students just graduating high school. For many students, community college can serve as a building block for future education choices, even those students that begin college with an idea of what he/she wants to study, but after a few classes, meeting with college advisors, speaking to other students, and financial obligations may decide to follow a different career…

"It's not just for kids," Obama said. "We also have to make sure that everybody has the opportunity to constantly train themselves for better jobs, better wages, better benefits." According to www.forum.nationstates.net (2015) if all states participate in this plan nine million students could save $3,800 a year on tuition. Of course, those not willing to put in the work will not be able to qualify for it. The student will be expected to maintain a decent grade point average which to me is an excellent criteria. This program seems like it will benefit the…
