Unit 4- Principles of safeguarding and protection in health and social care

1.1) There are many types of abuse, such as physical, sexual, emotional/psychological, financial, institutional, self-neglect and neglect by others. Here are some examples of those abuses:
• physical- hitting, shaking, biting, throwing, force feeding, and causing physical harm to a person.
• sexual- forcing someone to take part in sexual activities that they don't want to be part of using threats or coercion.
• emotional/psychological- bullying, devaluing individual self esteem, verbal abuse and swearing.
• financial- theft of money and/or property, forging signatures, using property without permission, forcing someone to sign documents for financial gain, all particularly with the elderly or those with learning difficulties.
• institutional- misuse of authority, failure to maintain professional boundaries, discrimination, humiliation, inappropriate use of medication, denying privacy and neglect.
• self-neglect- individuals engaging in neglectful and self harming behaviour including refusing to eat or drink, neglecting personal hygiene, causing actual bodily harm to themselves including cutting etc, unsanitary living conditions and inappropriate clothing.
• neglect by others- not caring for the basic needs of others including neglectful practice in feeding and not meeting the personal needs of an individual.
This is not an exhaustive list by any means but includes a broad range.
1.2) There are many signs and/or symptoms associated with each type of abuse for us to look out for, here are some of them:
• Physical- bruises, black eyes, welts, cuts, broken bones, untreated injuries, broken glasses, sudden change in behaviour, individuals reporting of being hit/slapped/kicked/mistreated, caregivers refusal to allow visitors to see a vulnerable adult alone.
• Sexual- disturbed behaviour including self harm, inappropriate sexualised behaviour, repeated urinary infections, depression
