1. Promote Professional Development

1.1 Professional development is a planned process of improving and increasing capabilities of staff. Within our setting it is the people who work within our organisation that determine its success. As a setting we are continually developing and enhancing our skills and knowledge to know that our clients are getting the best service and support available. Professional development enables us to keep up to date and make changes proactively to make sure the service is relevant and appropriate for service users.

As a setting we have a vision and all professional development is planned and in line with the vision of our organisation. By continuing professional development the day to day challenges and pressures are manageable, as we are able to transform in response to changing situations and requirements.

1.2 When improving professional development it is important to improve barriers to personal, social, emotional and intellectual barriers. This enables us to make sure the welfare of the staff is paramount as well as the clients. Within professional development it is essential to improve work/life balance and take into consideration family and other commitments, so that work pressures can be managed and overcome.

1.3 Within our setting all professional development is planned during supervision meetings with individuals, this enables us to achieve specific outcomes that are focussed on the needs or wishes of the individual, these outcomes can also contribute to the learning needs of the organisation.

Within our setting we select individuals to attend training opportunities and courses to develop specialist skills and knowledge which they can then use to feedback and train other staff. Continued professional development is paramount within our setting and is a major part of staff development and progress. Throughout both school and residential areas formal learning opportunities are sought these are in the form

    Within my Job role as team leader it is my own responsibility to further my own professional development. I can do this by attending regular training courses and sessions offered. I also ensure I check and update myself with the company’s policies and procedures as well as national legislation. I regularly check the company intranet to see if any of our policies have been updated or changed updating my own knowledge so any information given to staff is current and correct. We also receive bulletins weekly via email with any changes or updates. It is also important to check national legislation for example the Health and safety at work (1992) and the management of health and safety (1999) this ensures that I and my work force are working in a safe environment. I can also access new training opportunities via my supervisions with my manager, who gives me feedback on my performance and may be able to advise about any training I could benefit from. I can also ask if I feel I would benefit and further my professional development with additional training, which would be available for me to attend. It may be necessary to access outside training for my development, such as specialised training including catheter/stoma care, nebuliser training. This I then pass down to my staff. I also am developing via Bedford College who have enabled me to access my NVQ level 5 in health and social care for adults and young people. During supervisions it gives me and my manager the opportunity to evaluate and my knowledge and develop any training requirements. It is important for my manager to assess and acknowledge where I need improvement so I can be a more effective manager to the staff I manage. Any training I have completed is documented and written records are in my personnel folder in our office.     Professional development I feel is beneficial for both tutor and student. The process of reflecting on your own practices and having the discipline to be constructive about the actions you take to evaluate your own performance will determine the impact it has in the classroom and the teaching and learning experience. Overall this process has encouraged me to reflect on most of my practices which has helped me to understand my role as a teacher. This development has systematically reinforced the actual reason of why we as teachers perform the way we do. This has given me a boost in confidence because I now have a reason behind meaning. I use my own judgment to determine how well a particular teaching experience had benefitted my learners and whether things went good or bad. From this basic analysis I can adapt and enhance particular parts of a session to create and aim for a better learning experience. This gives me areas to focus on to help develop my skills as a teacher. I have previously focussed on inclusion and worked to move the whole class collectively by supporting them throughout their programme of learning. It is important to have the correct resources and utilise a range of techniques as this is vital in creating an interesting and challenging lesson for the individual. The Knowledge I have gained through developing different areas is becoming very useful and beneficial to my teaching. The increased presence of IT in modern day culture has encouraged the education system to use and follow the trend and integrate more user friendly IT systems into its institutions as well as increase the use of IT in the classroom. I have attended IT training sessions involving VLE’s, Quizdom, SMART board, online portfolios and other online resources. I have learnt to integrate some of this into the classroom.
