Outcome 1

Understanding what is required for competence in own work role.

1/ Describe the duties and responsibilities of own work role
My current job role is as a ‘care assistant’. I am responsible for providing support to the elderly in their own homes,
I support them with Personal care, assisting with meal preparation, assisting with medication, organising service user finances, assisting with meal planning, and maintaining records for service delivered.
I received an induction training course when I first joined the company, which provided specialised training relating to the learning disability sector. I receive regular supervision with my line manager, where I can discuss any problems, and get support. I can also request training, and my manager can highlight areas where she thinks I would benefit from further training in. I attend regular refresher courses in training, so that I am up to date with the current standards required for my role.
I treat all service users with respect and dignity, and my work practices reflect and promote equal opportunities. I have read, and understand my Company’s policies and procedures, and am aware of what to do in most circumstances, and the correct reporting/recording procedures to follow. I always work in a professional manner, and ensure all service user information is kept up to date, and confidential.

2/ Identify standards that influence the way the is carried out

Below is a list of example legislations, which are relevant to domiciliary care, and residential services. You should be aware of these laws, and how they relate to your role. These make up ‘standards’ to follow for good practice in your working practices.

3/ Describe ways to ensure your personal attitudes or beliefs do not affect the quality of your work

Do not let your personal feelings get in the way of doing your job correctly * Treat everybody as an equal and work to support the residents needs * Have a positive attitude towards all of the residents you take care of * Ensure you follow the policies and procedures of your work setting without making exceptions for anybody * Respect the rights each of the residents have * Do not allow prejudice in the work setting and give everybody the same opportunities, regardless of your opinions

You have to respond using the tools for your specific career. You're so focused on listening and hearing them, that you are not focused on yourself. You may register something they say that you philosophically disagree with, but you still serve them according to their needs and their goals. You may later ponder or just disregard the point you disagreed with.
The focus is accomplished not only by keeping your client's and your company's goals and rules in mind, but also with maturity and self-control. As you mature you learn that there is a time and a place for everything, and there are times when you think you might burst if you don't say anything, but you learn that you won't.

Sometimes that is by hard character building work, sometimes by kind corrections, sometimes by painful experience, or disciplinary action, but all are tools to build character, maturity, and self-control - if you accept the corrections and learn from them. You learn to prioritize what matters and not to be so self-absorbed.

Outcome 2
Be able to reflect on own work activities

1/ Explain why reflecting on work activities is an important way to develop knowledge, skills and practice.

Reflection on your own practice is important because it allows you to assess what you are doing well, identify areas where you might like or maybe need more training or guidance in to ensure you are performing to the best you can, and are meeting all standards and expectations within the nursery / setting / school policies and procedures.
It helps you think about what you are doing in the setting and to always be aware of how you work with the children, families, teachers and your class colleagues.
Reflecting on your practice can enhance and improve your confidence and self esteem because you can look at what you are doing well, the things you have learnt and achieved and feel good about yourself especially if you have done something with ease that you used to find difficult, if you have done something you never did well in or something that you have never tried before.

This then gives you the confidence to continue working in your current role with the knowledge that you are doing good.

2/ Assess how well own knowledge, skills and understanding meet standards
To assess how your own knowledge, skills and understanding meet the standards, your assessor will probably set an assignment for you to do, and do an observation of your work practice. But it would also be best to write a personal statement detailing:
• Your experience in the care sector.
• Training you have received (provide copies of your certificates for your assessor).
• The tasks you perform within your role.
• The way in which you perform your duties (professional, respect diversity, equality, confidentiality etc)

Outcome 3

Be able to agree a personal development plan

1/ Identify sources of support for own learning and development

• Asking colleagues and other professional’s questions.
• Accessing internal and external training.
• Spending time working alongside colleagues and other professional’s.
• Team meetings and discussions.

2/ Describe the process for agreeing a personal development plan and who should be involved

Personal development plan should be worked out with supervisor.
First step would be to think about what goals I have and then discuss with supervisor the best ways for achieving them.
Different development areas such as practical and communication skills, goals or targets I have set and a timescale for achieving them should also be discussed and agreed on with supervisor.
Next step would be a review process to see what progress I have made and how my plan needs to be updated.
