EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Many intervention efforts and research have been done aiming at reducing absence from job due to health problems. However, the efforts have resulted to decline in the rate of absence and a rise of the Presenteeism cases. Presenteeism describes the situation in which an employee reports to work but their productivity is less than the normal due to health problems. Many researchers have extensively researched the topic and their findings are almost the same though the methods of approach vary among different researchers. Researchers from business communities such as from America approach the topic in an economic perspective while others approach it in health perspective. The situation has attracted attention from many investors as evidences have proved that the cost of Presenteeism is usually higher than the cost of absence.

Introduction
Employees are required to be present at their work place during the stipulated time to perform their duties and responsibilities. The employees are therefore, expected to attend their duties with or without supervision. However, some hindrances arise due to absenteeism and hence the work that was supposed be done at a specific time remain undone. The hindrances are sometime unreasonable which they use as an excuse to avoid doing their responsibilities. Different organizations formulate rules and regulations that stipulate various circumstances under which an employee could miss the job and when not to. The rules and regulations compel employees to attend their job unless they have a valid reason to justify their actions. The regulations and rules force many people go to work when they are sick. This phenomenon in sociology is referred to as presenteeism. The essay will discuss the meaning of presenteeism and how it has been measured for the research. Additionally, the essay will review syntheses that have been done to show the effects of the sickness presenteeism. The different focus on the presenteeism in Europe compared to America. It will also discuss the reasons why the sickness presenteeism has risen to high levels among the employees. The methodology that has been used to collect relevant information will also be mentioned in the essay. After collection of the data, the causes will be discussed and the reason why employees attend their jobs when they are sick. The essay will expound on both short-term and long-term effects of presenteeism to the employees. Since the effects are not only on the employees, the essay will also include the effects on the employers. The rise in the presenteeism cases has attracted attention of unions and governments.
