However, the symptoms she is now experiencing of stomach cramps and diarrhea are indicative of her megadosing on Vitamin C. In this case, megadosing would be intaking Vitamin C in greater than 2000 mg per day. Diarrhea itself can cause dehydration and loss of electrolytes. So, Hannah has to be careful not to let this go on too long. The best recommendation would be for her to stop the supplementation immediately that is causing her symptoms and focus on her diet.
Though there is evidence that Vitamin C may help reduce the duration of colds, it has not been found to reduce the number of colds one might suffer in a given season. Therefore, Hannah should seek strengthen her immune system through her diet, plenty rest, intake of fluids, and regular exercise. Hannah should focus on getting her Vitamin C from at least five (5) servings daily of fresh fruits and vegetables such as strawberries, kiwi, citrus fruits, broccoli, sweet peppers and other essential nutrients.
