Windshield Survey
The city of La Puente is where the family selected resides in. This family consists of four family members, the father, mother, and two children over the age of 30 years, one male and the other female. For this study the focus will be on the father, a 68-year-old Filipino, retired, a current smoker for more than 30 years with a history of hypertension and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). La Puente Population in 2011 was 39,849 a -3.0% drop from the year 2000. About 49.9% are males (19,895) and 50.1% females (19,954). The median resident age is 31.5 years, compared to the California median age, which is 45.6 years of age. La Puente zip codes consist of 91744, 91746, 91747 and 91749. The estimated median household income in 2009 was $49,492 about an $8,000 increase since the year 2000 compared to California’s median income, which is $58,931. The estimated house of condo value in 2009 is $329,676 with the median gross rent of $1,031. La Puente’s boundary is along the streets of Puente, Valley, Temple and Francisquito. The land area is approximately 3.49 square miles with about 11,410 people per square miles. The different races in La Puente consist of, * Hispanic - 33,896 (85.1%)

* Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone - 31 (0.08%) Hospitals that are close by the city of La Puente, is Kaiser Foundation Hospital in Baldwin Park which provides acute care, volunteer, non-profit and emergency services which is about four miles away, Queen for the Valley Hospital in Covina provides the same services as stated about six miles away and Greater El Monte Community Hospital provides same services as stated above except for being a non-profit private hospital in the city of South El Monte about six miles away. There is an Amtrak station near La Puente that reaches to Fullerton (12 miles) Pomona (12 miles), and Pasadena (14 miles). Offering services like; fully wheelchair accessible, enclosed waiting area, public restrooms, public payphones, full-service food facilities, paid short-term parking, paid long-term parking, taxi stand, public transit connection. In La Puente there is one College/Adult School, which is, Hacienda La Puente Adult Education, offers a full time enrollment of 3,370 students. Other colleges are, * Rio Hondo in Whittier with a full-time enrollment of 5,125 students, five miles away * Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, offers a full-time enrollment for 10,501 students about eight miles away. * Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, offers full-time enrollment for 6,078 students, about 8 miles away * Citrus College in Pomona, offers full-time enrollment for 4,774 students, 9 miles away * Cal Poly University in Pomona, offers full-time enrollment for 17,476 students about 9 miles away There are two public high schools in La Puente; Yorbita Elementary with about 590 students’ grades 1-12, and Baldwin Academy with about 472 students’ grades 1-12. The city also has two private schools; Bishop Amant high school with 1,289 students’ grades 9-12 and Calvary Christian School about 700 students grades’ 6-12.
