Animal Farm Essay
Question – Napoleon as Stalin
Stalin, the Russian leader during the Russian Revolution, and Napoleon, the head pig and ruler of Animal Farm, share more similarities than any other characters and political figures in Animal Farm. Napoleon is modeled almost perfectly off of Joseph Stalin. Napoleon was developed to share character traits with Stalin such as intelligence, leadership, and devotion toward ones country. Just like Stalin was thought of a great leader of the Russians, Napoleon was also considered a fantastic leader of Animal Farm. Stalin had tons of followers in his beliefs, the same way Napoleon had many followers despite all of them being manipulated. Many Russians agreed with Joseph Stalin on everything he did, and just about every animal on Animal Farm had a great devotion and admiration for Napoleon because he was an extremely fast and smart thinker. However, with all of these followers backing up Stalin and Napoleon, it’s impossible to make everyone happy, and both Stalin and Napoleon ran across several enemies. Joseph Stalin and Napoleon both encountered huge enemies during their rules. Stalin’s rival and sworn enemy was Leon Trotsky, who greatly disapproved of what Stalin was doing with Russia. Napoleon’s own enemy was Snowball, who was actually modeled after Trotsky himself, and Napoleon cleverly “deals” with Snowball after Snowball “knocks” over the windmill the animals had worked so hard on for a long time. A huge thing they both had in common was how they lied about food production; both Stalin and Napoleon replaced the food with lies in order to avoid criticism. Animal Farm’s own Napoleon was not a good speaker or as clever as Snowball, much like Stalin was thought of being intellectually inferior to Trotsky. Like Stalin, Napoleon was cruel, brutal, selfish, devious and corrupt and both of them killed anyone who they believed would pose a threat to their rule of just merely have opposing opinion. These...
