This poem brought up some mixed feelings for me. On one side, my family is all from a small town so I understand the connection but overwhelming desire to get out. On the other side, I am preparing to leave for college and have some mixed feelings about leaving my home town. My mom grew up in a little small town called Idalia, CO. She graduated in a class of a whole ten kids, and that was a huge class for that town. I still have family from that area, so I seemingly grew up with a small town background. I would spend all of my free time there: summers, winters, long weekends, and holidays. This has provided me with the understanding of why someone would feel trapped in a small town and have the desire to get out. But when I think about moving away for college, my stomach churns. I have lived in Loveland my entire life. I am incredibly excited about going to the University of Denver for college, but damn, am I really old enough to live on my own? I am so worried that a small part of me is still going to ache for my little, boring hometown of Loveland. I have always been so sheltered and safe here. Am I really ready to go off into the real world, alone and…

In the poem “A Story” by Li-Young Lee, the author uses a third person point of view, specific dialogue, and a creative structure in order to illustrate the growth in the relationship between the father and son and the complexities that are anticipated to arise as things change.…

    Factory Work

This poem reminds me of two monotonous jobs that I had right out of high school. Since I was just a teenager with no work experience and no marketable skills, I had very limited options in the jobs that I could get. The first job that I had was working part time as a tour guide at a pumpkin patch. I would sit on the hay wagon and collect the tickets of the passengers, and once we had enough people loaded the tractor would start up and take us around the farm. This is where the monotony would kick in. I had the speech so memorized that I could recite it perfectly several years after. I didn’t have to think about the words that were coming out of my mouth, I would just need to stand there and let the speech roll out. I think the cadence occupied more of my thoughts than the actual words. Even though the job was monotonous I still really enjoyed being outside and seeing people’s reactions to the farm.…
