      Have you ever wondered bout the meaning of the content of your dreams? Dreams are a world in which the rules of reality do not apply. The word dream comes from the Middle English word dreme, which means, "Joy" and "music." For centuries, we’ve tried to find out how dreams occur. Early civilization thought dream worlds were real, physical existing places only entered throughout your sleep. The ideas of dreams have evolved through out time becoming the actual truth of why we dream. Everyone dreams, but not everyone understands the concept. It is true that a human will spend about 6 years of their life, dreaming! Dreaming is healthy and important to human brain activity. We will explore the reasons in which we dream, various types of dreams that can occur, and dream interpretation.

      Let us explore, exactly what is a dream? Neurologists have studied the phenomenon of dreams by studying brain activity during sleep. They study dreams by brain imaging, which they used to find out that that dreams occur during a stage of sleep called REM or Rapid Eye Movement phase. During the REM sleep cycle, neurologists have found that the brains activity is really similar to what it would be when you are awake. One difference though is the system used that causes the brain to control body movements is deactivated. This is a safety to ensure the movements in ones sleep will not hurt them. REM usually lasts for about 15 to 20 minutes each. One will remember a dream better when the awake directly from the sleep. Dreams are apart of your own subconscious, which is the sum of all of your fears, memories, impressions, beliefs, insecurities, and irrationalities. In a dream, you are shut off from the external world and your normal subconscious continues. The sensory impressions are shut off and the mind look inward.
