Northwest Ordinance of 1787:
1. Provided a new structure for government of the Northwest territory 2. Bill of Rights
3. Established requirements for statehood
4. Abolished slavery
5. Brought order to western settlement and incorporated frontier Americans into an expanding federal system Articles of Confederation vs Constitution:
1. Congress could request states to pay taxes………Congress could levy taxes on individuals 2. No system of federal courts…………..Had courts to settle disputes between citizens, states 3. No provision to regulate trade…………Congress could regulate trade between states. 4. Sovereignty resided in the states………Constitution was the law of the land 5. Congress could not draft troops……….Congress could raise an army to handle military situations.

Thomas Paine and Common Sense:

Thomas Paine wrote an essay entitled Common Sense which influenced colonists to push closer toward independence. It was written in the fashion that the common people could understand and relate to it.

For example, it systematically stripped the kingship of historical and theological justification since the English pressed that the crown could do no wrong. Common Sense paved the way for the Declaration of Independence. It stated that it was Americas natural right to be independent and that it was in the best interest of the colonies. It stressed that it was necessary and morally correct.

In conclusion, Common Sense was a powerful democratic manifesto and it persuaded the common folk to sever ties with Great Britain and declare independence.
