The type of retailer that Nordstrom's is classified as and the characteristics it shares with other retailers of this type.
Nordstrom main focus is on upscale clientele, still it is still considered a department store. Nordstrom is a large scale retail unit that carries a wide and different assortment of merchandise that is classified into different section divisions by product type, quality and brand name. Nordstrom carries a wide range of shopping goods that include apparel, cosmetics, house wares, electronics, and even furniture. You can make your purchases at each department itself. Each department does its own promotion, buying, service and control. Each group operates independently. It is headed by a buyer who is responsible for the types and quality of merchandise sold, as well as any promotions that may be used.
The company has a new computerized inventory system that helps buyers and salespeople know what is needed in the stores and what isn’t. The buyer thus decides what items to purchase and the salespeople can display those items properly in the store. This enables the store people to sell more full priced items, and improve sales. Nordstrom’s also uses selective distribution as a type of retailing. The department stores chain now manages inventories at its store and its website as one entity. If a shopper is looking for a particular item online and it is not in stock in the warehouse, Nordstrom will still be able to fill the order by pulling it from store stock. The same is true for in-store shopping, where an item out-of-stock at a particular location does not mean the consumer is out of luck.
