Nonverbal Communication Assignment Communication is not just about words. It can be shown in many ways such as speech, songs, words and also non-verbal such as body language, sign language, paralanguage, touch, eye contact, body movements etc. Therefore it is like everything in day today life. Communication is more important for people to express their feelings, ideas and etc. A sender, a message and a recipient is needed to have a proper communication. At the first day when professor gave us assignment, where we will be asked to observe nonverbal cues as used by an individual among various setting, I already know about whom I will talk about, and who will help me with my experiment. The person whom I will observe in various interaction, this is my boyfriend. One day a homeless man was asking everyone downtown for money. When he asked my boyfriend, he made direct eye contact and said “No, sorry”. He wouldn’t go away. So, testing the water, I held eye contact with it and wouldn’t break it. The scene escalated to the point where he was on the verge of getting violent. I think my boyfriend was probably well dressed, clean and shaved and he was homeless and in an inferior position asking him for money and he probably thought he did have a buck to help him and my boyfriend just didn’t want to. And when he maintained eye contact he gave him an opportunity to let his anger of the world out. Since, he take the bus 3 times a week to go to work; he selected to make the proxemics experiment on the personal space zone that people from different culture sets on a bus seat on a regular basis. As I said above, it takes place on the bus and involves people from different cultures, starting right after people pay and look for a sit. He was planning to sit down next to people or ask them if he can sit down next to them and see how they would respond on such act and how distance him or she can be next to him. My boyfriend made an effort to sit close to his mom at one point throughout the day, getting very close to her. Making the situation an intimate space touching her arm and leaning towards her as they speak communicate. Involved in the process was his mother. She was very receptive to the way he was acting. It seemed as if she enjoyed him being that close to her when they were together. She put her hand on his and put her head on his shoulder and looked him in the eye a lot more than normal. I think she enjoyed the time that they shared at that moment. Learning that his mother enjoyed him being closer to her made him feel bad that he don’t take the time to sit with her closely. Share time that is more intimate with her. Become closer to her, like they used to be when he was young. At another day of experiment my boyfriend was in not a good mood. I tried to speak with him about what the next type of nonverbal communication we will do, but he spoke with a high and varied pitch come across as more competent. His voice associated with strength and seemed to me that high pitch voice signals tenseness and nervousness. So I decided not to touch him because every word from my mouth made him more aggressive. But for me, it meant that the experiment is still a success. For the conclusion of our last experiment my boyfriend decided uses of chronemics. He said that as the boss of the AMT company it is very important that his employees were at work on time. Because they carry those patients who need to be beaten in the hospital on time, otherwise it could end very badly and the patient may die.

Communication to me is a way to get a message out to sent and received to an individual this can be accomplished in a variety of ways. A deaf person will communicate with their hands in the form of sign language. People also communicate through body language, an example that I can give is if a patient is in pain but unable to speak some will start adjusting their body, closing their eyes, wrapping their arms around the area that is in pain, or even rocking motions. When I am in a bad mood I will start to roll my eyes and my words can be short and sharp, sometimes when I want to be extra attractive to my husband I will walk with an extra pep in my step, smile, and bat my eyes. As we can see from the start communication is done in several ways it does not always have to be expressed verbally it can be done written as well. We have to remember that communication is the purpose of getting an idea across to a group, or a person.…

A touch, making eye contact with someone, or the tone of voice you take when saying something. All of these things make up a big part of how you communicate and interact with other people. These ways of communicating all fall under the category of non-verbal communication. Non-verbal communication is, “those aspects of communication, such as gestures and facial expressions, that do not involve verbal communication but which may include nonverbal aspects of speech itself, (accent, tone of voice, speed of speaking, etc)” (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/nonverbal communication) as defined by Dictionary.com. Non-verbal communication makes up most of the ways that we communicate with someone. Non-verbal cues are vital in a conversation. “One study at UCLA indicated that up to 93 percent of communication effectiveness is determined by nonverbal cues. Another study indicated that the impact of a performance was determined 7 percent by the words used, 38 percent by voice quality, and 55 percent by the nonverbal communication.” (http://humanresources.about.com/od/interpersonalcommunicatio1/a/nonverbal_com.htm) A person’s tone of voice plays a big part when giving non-verbal cues. If something is said with a strong tone a voice, the audience may perceive enthusiasm or confidence. Also, that same exact thing could be said in a hesitant tone of voice and the audience could perceive that the speaker is intimidated or nervous. If you were to say something in a positive or soothing tone, then that could promote motivation or a sense of safety in the person you are speaking to.…
