“Too Cool for School”
The computer era has definitely arisen in the 1990’s. Providing creations of science and technology to aid and assist mankind in its day to day living. Truly, the world has started depending on technology and with its advancement nowadays, people have been trying to cope up with the latest technological trend that will make living more effortless and their financial state in the society higher. In line with this, the government in the Philippines is planning to implement the usage of tablets in high school classrooms. “Philippine President Simeon Benigno Aquino III announced during the launch of the country’s new K-12 basic education program recently that the government is eyeing the use of PC tablets in public and private schools in lieu of traditional textbooks.” (Philippine Inquirer) A tablet PC is a wireless, portable personal computer with a touch screen interface. The tablet form factor is typically smaller than a notebook computer but larger than a smartphone. The government and school administrations must proceed carefully when considering whether to adopt this new technology on a large scale. For me though, seeing education as a way of producing autonomous people who can create a life where they feel confident with technology, gather skills in its use and get the most out of it in a high school setting, a tablet is an odd choice.
“Tablets offer immense potential, particularly in the field of education” says Sohail (2013), a known writer in the field of technological genre. According to him, Apple has recently launched “iBooks” for students. Ibooks transforms paper textbooks into multi-touch textbooks with 3D content and interactive images. In support of this, David (2012), a writer and an editor, claims that students, specifically those who are studying in high school will no longer be weighed down by dozens of text
