In this Essay I will be comparing and contrasting the treatment of the Jews in the book " Night" by author Elie Wiesel and the movie “Shcindlers List.” In our English class we watched the movie " Schindler List" and read about Elie in the book “Night”. Also the horrifying experience he not only lived but witnessed during the time of the Holocaust. In the movie “Shcindler’s List” the Jews were brought and forced to live in fear. In the book "Night” Elie talks about how he survived the horrifying and tribulation of the treatment from the Nazis during the time of the Holocaust.…

“..it shocks your brain out of reality, to a point where it doesn’t seem real”(Crystal 30). During the holocaust, many Jews were dehumanized and used for labor under the authority of the Nazi soldiers. This caused a huge disruption in the way that these people thought, functioned and behaved on a regular basis. In the book “Night” by Elie Wiesel, the main character Elie struggles through many inhumane events, which caused him to lose his faith in God, man and himself. Elie responds negatively to devastation during the Holocaust, yet others respond to devastation positively; the difference is perspective.…

Schindler’s List and Night are both descriptive, accurate representations of the horror that occurred during the Holocaust. Both works place a spotlight over the mistreatment and fear that people of the Jewish culture faced during this specific time period. Schindler’s List and Night are two completely different pieces representing two very different Holocaust stories. Both stories hold several similarities and differences because of the point of view, location, and main characters discussed in them.…

    Horses of the Night

In the short story, "Horses of the Night", the author, Margaret Laurence, discusses the idea of escaping reality. Chris, the male protagonist, is the character who is trying to escape reality. Chris is a young man who is struggling with life, and in order to escape his life, he dreams up his own world where anything can happen. Chris doesn't understand reality, and he doesn't want to be a part of it either. In the story it seems like certain things don't bother him. When grandfather Conner was complaining about how Chris was in Manawaka on his money and not his parents, Chris didn't do anything. Grandfather Conner always tried to make Chris feel guilty for staying in Manawaka with him. He rubbed it in Chris's face that his family, back in Shallow Creek, had no money. Chris acted as though he wasn't affected by these comments by his grandfather. "I felt the old rage of helplessness. But as for Chris-he gave no sign of feeling anything."-pg.285. When Chris was with Vanessa, he would often talk about Shallow Creek. He would talk about his two riding horses Duchess and Firefly, and how they are perfectly matched to be racing horses. But to Vanessa's disappointment this was only another one of Chris's illusions. They were not racing horses, but two old lanky horses who were unevenly matched and didn't work well together. When Chris was done high school, and he was told that he couldn't go to college, he didn't seemed to be affected once again. In the story he made it sound as if he wanted to go to college so badly to become and engineer and build huge cable bridges like the Golden Gate Bridge. But, once again he just shrugged it off and didn't seem to care anymore. "My Mother had said, "He's taken in amazingly well-he doesn't even mention it, so we mustn't either.""- pg.290. Since Chris couldn't go to college he shifted from one worthless job to the next, most of the time being a travelling sales man trying to sell garbage.…

The Twilight film series, based on Stephanie Meyer’s young adult novel series, are poor excuses for blockbusters, because of the incredibly poor acting, terrible dialogue, and no plot; and it portrays women to be subservient to men. The movie was a big disappointment to me. When Twilight the movie came out, I was really excited about going and seeing it; every young teenage girl was. When I went and saw it, I was very disappointed. It was nothing to what I thought it would be.…

"There are some men who were born to do our unpleasant jobs for us", (pg. 288). To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee. You may categorize these distinct individuals under the column of people who we know as archetypes. Archetypes are people who are role models, leaders, captains, and the best at what they do. The archetype focused on in this novel is Atticus Finch, the archetypal lawyer who in incomparable to any other ordinary lawyer. The reason why Atticus is the archetypal lawyer is because he defends every innocent person with every effort he has, It is because out of all of the lawyers you may have heard of, none of them come close to the amount of respect and dignity Atticus treats everyone in the courthouse with, and lastly, as a lawyer, Atticus makes his decisions with and by the law no matter how difficult the situation is.…

About the poem – The poem was anthologized in Collected Poems (1952 – 1988). It is one of the first poems of Ezekiel and presents a scary picture of the superstition ridden India where an insect is given monstrous dimensions. It carries Ezekiel’s stringiest of satires against the many maladies that affect the Indian society. Not to mention it also explores the ever benign love of a mother for her child, which in itself is a conspicuous feature of Indianness.…

The night was dark. The sky was only lit by a full moon and a few faint stars. I was sitting quietly in my basement with my sister and two of our friends, Danny and Heather. We were all feeling rather bored. I came up with the idea to go get my Ouija board from my room. I told everyone, "I'll be back in a minute." I ran upstairs to my room, grabbed the Ouija board from under my bed, and quickly ran back down to the basement. I set the board up and got the oracle out. Everyone had this odd look on their face. They seemed a little hesitant about taking part in playing with the Ouija with me. I talked everyone into it…

The poet recalls very vividly (clearly) the night when his mother was stung by a scorpion. Ten hours of incessant rain had forced the scorpion to seek refuge in the poet’s house (rain water must have flooded its hiding place in the open) It sought refuge under a bag of rice and stung the poet’s mother when she went into that room. The viciously wicked creature poured its poison into her in a flash of its devilish tail and ventured out into the rain. On hearing of the unfortunate incident, the peasants rushed to the poet’s house with lighted candles and lanterns. They uttered the name of God countless times and prayed to God to immobilise the evil creature. Against the light of the lanterns, the shadows of the crowd cast on the mud walls looked like huge scorpions. The peasants looked for the scorpion everywhere where but it in vain. Being unsuccessful in their attempt to capture the scorpion they clicked their tongues. They were superstitious people and made several observations. They said that with every movement of the scorpion, its poison would also spread/course in the mother’s blood. Hence, it was imperative (essential) that the creature should not move at all and remain still. Some peasants said that her pain that night would burn away all her sins of her previous birth. They wished that her present agony should reduce her suffering in the next birth. They hoped that in this illusionary world where evil outweighs good deeds, her pain would diminish the quantum of evil. Some tried to console the mother with the remark that the scorpions poison would purify/cleanse her body of all desires and her soul of sinful ambition. They sat around the mother on the floor. Their faces were calm and peaceful. They had a look of understanding, as if she was meant to suffer to purify herself.…

Night of the Sorpion' is a poignant poem that evokes the strong hold of superstition within our social psyche. Ezekiel recalls the night when his mother was stung by a scorpion. With the onset of the monsoons, the ten hours of warm and steady rains had compelled the mysterious scorpion to crawl into the house and hid itself beneath a sack of rice in the dark store room. Without any mercy, it raised up its lethal, venomous and diabolic tail and stung Ezekiel's mother in one of her toes while she was busy in the store room unaware. Then it left her helpless in the dark store room and went out into the rain again. Almost all the peasants in the neighbourhood came in with a high spirit of concern. They entered the residence like swarm of flies and chanted loudly, the name of God for more than a hundred times to paralyze the evil sting of the scorpion. They came in with lanterns and candles and created giant shadows of the scorpion on the mud baked walls. They searched for him but he was not found. They clicked their tongues and said that with every movement that the scorpion made, the venom moved in the mother's blood. She laid at the centre of the of the floor of the room with the peasnts surrounding her. Their first chanted prayer was for the scorpin to remain still. Secondly, they chanted that her present suffering decrease the misfortunes of her next birth. Thirdly, that the sum of evil balanced in this unreal world against the sum of good become diminish by her pain.…
