NIGERIA, AFRICA AND SOUTH AMERICA:
ENHANCING RELATIONS IN A CHANGING WORLD

Abstract
This article tries to engage with the historical and current issues in relations between Africa and South America, with special emphasis on Nigeria in a global environment that many agree is in a state of flux. Short of engaging in advocacy for a renewed and more serious partnership between Africa and South America, the article incisively historicizes the basis for renewed cooperation between both regions, even as it engages with the fact of globalization in shaping relations and reactions in the international system today. In addressing the subject, the article examines the nature and character of the economies of selected South American countries, the state of the global political economy, Africa – South America relations, and the imperative for cooperation between the two regions in the South Atlantic. While observing that the colonial, post-colonial and post-war experiences of the two regions make it logically necessary for the two regions to rekindle their relations; it concludes that it is important that bilateral and multilateral political, economic and cultural relations be forged and improved upon in order to improve chances of benefiting more from shared resources and opportunities thrown up by globalization.
