One day I hope to become an NHL Official, Officiating hockey is a very overlooked career because most people don’t even know that it is a full time job. In fact, the National Hockey League spends millions of dollars every year on the development and training of its officials. Also, the NHL trusts elite groups with all the responsibilities of maintaining the integrity of the world’s fastest game. A career in the field of a national hockey league official requires physical testing, rule knowledge, skating tests, and game situations. They work with the best athletes in the world, whom are all fighting for a competitive advantage. It’s their job to determine whether the advantage is fair, and if not they must determine whether or not a penalty should be called. Officials oversee game play to ensure that games run according to the rulebook. To become an official at the professional level, someone must endure working for various leagues, going from game to game, city to city. Although no college degree is required to become an NHL official, it requires many hours of job training, camps, evaluations, and certification tests.
An NHL official’s job is more than what some people think, such as showing up to a rink and working a game. This just merely scratches the surface of a life consuming passion. Officials spend 9 months out of the year traveling from city to city. They spend days on the road at a time, only to be home about 10 days a month. Their job is their lifestyle. Their off time is during the season and the summer is mostly dedicated to family. Although all travel and lodging expenses are paid for, a life on the road can be a stressful and lonely at times.
Unlike baseball where the umpires stay together the whole season, National Hockey League officials do not.
