In this Borough live about 1, 5 million inhabitants. Those are just about 20 percent of the whole population of the city. Despite of that it is the smallest one it is divided into more regions. Those three regions are Lower, Midtown and Uptown. The Bronx has 1, 3 million inhabitants and 42 square miles. The Bronx is the Borough which is way up in the north. The most famous thing is the Yankee Stadium of the New York Yankees. Another attraction is the popular Bronx Zoo. It is the biggest Zoo in the whole United States. Brooklyn has 71 square miles and 2, 5 million inhabitants. With that population it is the biggest district. This Borough is also very interesting, because of its ethnic. Many different ethnic people live side by side in a small area. Queens is the biggest district, because of its land area. It has 109 square miles and a population of almost 2, 3 inhabitants. Staten Island has 58 square miles and just 470,000 inhabitants. This Borough is an island. You can just get there by going over the Verrazano- Narrows Bridge or by a ferry. You have to pay tolls for the bridge.
It all began in 1542. Giovanni da Verrazano discovered the New York City area, but he was not interested in discovering it any further. In 1614 the area which is now New York was found by Dutch people and called it New Amsterdam, because Henry Hudson discovered America in 1609 and told everyone in the Netherlands that that area has a good location so Dutch people came and settled down. Because of the fast growing of that area English men got interested in it and conquered it in 1664. The English men called it New York. 1788 New York City was the capital of the United States of America. And one year after that George Washington became first president and took the oath in New York. Because of the fast growing of the city it became the biggest town in the country and people started to work on a road system with grid-like roads which includes that all roads are parallel in 1811. The first skyscrapers were built, because of so many people in the city. At the beginning of the 20th century were built the empire state building, the Chrysler building and the Woolworth building.
