New Antibiotic Could Make Food Safer
This article was very interesting.   Especially since there is always a debate about antibiotics being used on the animals and food products we eat.   This article introduced a new antibiotic that can be used and is more effective than the main antibiotic that is currently used.
This research took place under the supervision of Wilfred van der Donk, a chemistry professor at the University of Illinois.   Currently there are natural products that are added to food that we eat that protect us from many diseases.   One of the most commonly used products is an antibiotic that naturally occurs in milk which is made from bacteria directly from the cows’ udders.   This antibiotic called nisin was approved and has been used since 1969.   Nisin is the most commonly used antibiotic kills a broad spectrum of bacteria and is used to help milk and other dairy products from spoiling.   Nisin does have a promising possibility of being able to help with the treatment of bovine mastitis which is a devastating disease that affects the herd of many farmers.   The problem with Nisin is that it is unstable at higher temperatures and that it becomes unstable at the neutral pH level needed for many foods or pharmaceuticals.   With much research a new antibiotic is much more tolerable to heat and pH.
This new antibiotic in which a gene is inserted into E.coli is called geobacillin.   Geobacillin was found to kill bacteria in a much more effective way than the currently used antibiotic.   All preclinical trials have shown great possibility which would help farmers financially by protecting their herds from the bovine mastitis disease.   The results of this research were published in the Proceeding of the National Academy of Science journal which is a very reliable source.   My conclusions of this new antibiotic is that we still do not know the full impact of the antibiotics on humans and until the research is able to publish the effects on humans...
