New Age technology Effect on Children
New technology is advancing at an incredible rate, so fast in fact, that computers will soon exceed human intelligence. The rapid advancements of new technology just within the last ten years have been shown to impact children’s imagination, connection with nature, and their learning experiences. Today’s advancing technology has already had both positive and negative effects on children. A time not that long ago children would spend most of their play time outside building forts to fight off imaginary monsters, villains, or even the crusade little boy or girl with cuties. Summers with children spent outside using their imagination for entertainment is transitioning into summers spent in front of video games and on visual media device, such as an IPod. As stated in an article from ScientificDaily.com “By using more visual media, students will process information better," she said. "However, most visual media are real-time media that do not allow time for reflection, analysis or imagination — those do not get developed by real-time media such as television or video games. Technology is not a panacea in education, because of the skills that are being lost.” (University of California - Los Angeles ,2009 January 28).
Children need to spend time in nature, in the outdoors. There are several benefits to children spending time in the outdoors. Fresh air, natural sunlight increases Vitamin D, running around and playing produces trimmer and healthy kids, and the list could go on and on. Beside these healthy effects directly to children, the American Institutes for Research® conducted a study, submitted to the California Department of Education, of the impact of weeklong residential outdoor education programs.
