Baracka misses easy steps because his nerve pathways carry information too slow since he has a myelin disorder. A myelin disorder is caused by damage to the myelin sheath that surrounds many neurons causing nerve conductions to decrease (The Human Body in Health and Disease p.238-239). Multiple Sclerosis is an example of a myelin disorder that causes similar problems. Multiple Sclerosis causes a person to loose myelin around the axons; when this happens, nerve conduction decreases, weakness and incoordination occurs (The Human Body in Health and Disease p238).
Adrenoleukodystrophy is a type of hereditary condition that causes damage to the membrane surrounding nerve cells in your brain(Loving Lorenzo). In adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD), your body can't break down very long-chain fatty acids, causing high levels of saturated fatty acids to build up in your brain, nervous system and adrenal gland. Symptoms include difficulty controlling urination, possible worsening muscle weakness or leg stiffness, problems with thinking speed and visual memory, decreased understanding of verbal communication, deterioration of handwriting skills, difficulty at school, difficulty understanding spoken material, hearing loss, visual impairment or blindness, and death within months(Loving Lorenzo). Specific treatment for X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy is not available, but eating a diet low in very-long-chain fatty acids and taking special oils can lower the blood levels of very-long-chain fatty acids (Loving Lorenzo). These oils are called Lorenzo's oil, after the son of the family who discovered the treatment. This treatment is being tested for X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy, but it does not cure the disease and may not help all patients (Loving Lorenzo). Bone marrow transplant is also being tested as an experimental treatment.
