Autobiography of a Reader Assignment

This is a chance for you to explore your own history as a “reader” as well as introduce yourself to me. Your task in this assignment is to provide a brief “autobiography” of your life as a reader – a picture of the type of reader you are. Even if you do not read a lot or have never been fond of reading you have surely interacted with reading throughout your life and still do. We will revisit these autobiographies later in the semester as we reflect on what we have learned.

Consider the following questions as you write:
*You certainly do not have to address all of these – pick the ones that you can relate to and can provide the most holistic view of you as a reader. You should, however, make sure that at some point in your paper you share a bit about your early, middle, and current reading history/preferences. In other words I do want to see a bit about your past with reading as well as where you are now as a reader.

* What are your earliest memories of learning to read or being read to? At home or during your very early schooling. Did it come easily or difficult? * What were/are some of your favorite children’s books you read (or had read to you)? What are some of your least favorite that you remember? Why did you like/dislike these? * What were your reading habits like as you got older and moved through elementary and then middle and high school? Were there any series of books you read? Any magazines you read regularly? * Consider your required school reading throughout the years. Were there any books you found you really liked? What about them did you like? Were there any you couldn’t stand? What about them did you not like? Were there any that you tolerated but later found you were glad to have read? Explain. * What are your current reading habits? Besides reading required for college, what do you read? Novels? Non-fiction books? Blogs? Online magazines and newspapers? Comic books? * What

Throughout my childhood I would avoid books as much as possible simply because I never enjoyed reading like others did. When I did read, it would be because I discovered a really good series. Other than that I wouldn’t read because I never grew up with being read to, so I didn’t find it enjoyable.…

A lot of books I can remember reading made my childhood so great. Growing up as a child, going to the library was one of my most favorite hobbies to do. My mother would always take me there and she would read to me anything from Junie B. Jones to Arthur books, Dr. Seuss, Charlottes’ Web. Dr. Seuss was one of my most favorites. Dr. Seuss’s Green Eggs and Ham will always be a childhood favorite. At the library, my mother would read word by word very slowly to make sure I’d understand what she was reading. Age 3-5, I would take part in a summer program at the library that involves reading. The volunteers who were…

They were mostly books about adventures for the grade level I was. Later in middle and high school, I read books about romance, drugs, novels, series, etc. All the books I read that time were books that I got in the schools. My parents never spent money on books for me because books were not cheap and easy to buy that time and where I lived. All the books I read were from the school or from friends.…

They never asked me what do I want to read about or what I want to learn about until my 7th grade year when we had to read a book, take a test on it, and then write a book report on it. When I was listening to my teacher describe the assignment I was waiting for the circumstances. Then she said anything we want to read and do a book report on. I was dumbfounded when I went to the library because I had no idea on where to start. So I just started going to random areas of the library and seeing anything that just popped out at me and begged me to read it. Finally one did, and to this day still my favorite book I have ever read, “Iron Marshall” by Louis L’Amour. I fell in love with this book. I read it every night before I went to sleep and every day during school when I had down time during class. What drew me in was that there was action in every chapter and the story was in such good detail. I now know the saying that the book is better than the movie. And it is all because of “Iron Marshall”. After reading that book I had to see what else Louis L’Amour had because of how much I fell in love with the first one. Oh he did and to my surprise I can’t pick a favorite one! I read every single book he had in the library by the end of my sophomore year in high…

He categorizes the types of readers into two groups – “The Few” and “The Many” and summaries four vast differences between them. He explains that “the many” never read anything more than once and they turn to reading as a last resource. “Those who read great works, on the other hand, will read the same work ten, twenty or thirty times during their course of their life.” (Lewis 2) He also describes how readers use and appreciate pictures and music. Furthermore, he explains the types of events unliterary readers enjoy.…

Reading was fun when it was newly acquired skill. I was excited to read to my parents when they returned home from work. I remember reading my favorite book series by R.L. I could relate to that because at the time, I was taking piano lessons.…

There are many techniques and strategies that can be implemented to encourage our students to learn in fun and creative ways. One of the strategies we have chosen to use is by administering an interest inventory to our students. By graphing the results of the interest inventory, we can better visualize the interests of our students and create lessons according to what interests them most. As with most people, adults included, if we do something we enjoy, we will do a better job of completing the assignment.…
